The R-16s were actually swapped out from the Eastern Div sooner than that. I remember R-16s on the 4 Av lcl in Jan of 1968 running with white paste on signs reading "95 St." The R-9s were on the Eastern Div almost from the start of Chrystie in 1967 running first on the Jamaica to Canal St service and signed up "JJ" also with temporary white stick on route signs. By the time 57/6 opened in 1968, there were sufficient numbers of R-9s to provide all the service on the new KK route and to start replacing the steels on the M and LL although there were some reports of an occasional steel showing up on the KK. By mid 1969, there were significant numbers of R-16s running on the RR this time with proper signs.
