Of course, all the phoam are waiting for Amtrak to allow them to run into NYP in revenue service. If NJT doesn't hurry up and qualify MLVs into Bay Head, then they won't be seen on any NJCL trains going down there . . . it'd only make sense to restore the one-seat ride that NJT got rid of when they changed over from E60s to ALP-44s after all . . . |

I hope they don't order anymore MLVs. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy riding them, but Arrow IIIs perform so much better. They could have, if they didn't blow all that money on MLVs. Arrows that could do voltage changes on the fly and that have "long doors" would be ideal for NJT. (What a shame that SEPTA is the first commuter RR in the USA that has MUs with "long doors", eh?) |

Their selling point is "one-seat ride". It is not train frequency or lower fares to garnish market share. If they give the RVL, for example, any NYPS slots, they will have to boot out as many other trains, like Montclair or South Amboy. Do it off peak, and they have used another train set, increased operating costs 33% (from 3 to 4 train sets) which on a line with 45% fare box recovery can never be paid out of increased patronage. |

As we have seen on the LIRR, these "token" (your term) or political (my term) dual mode trains have completely failed at wooing anyone back from the Ronkonkoma or Port Washington branches. They have caused intrA-branch ridership diversions from train to train, but that is all.Just take a look at the half empty commuter parking lot in places like Greenlawn, Northport, Smithtown, etc. |

That doesn't make sense to me. In fact, I would even argue that this strategy makes the service less attractive, since operating the diesel branches as a local branch connecting service would allow you to run the unit back and forth and meet main line electrics at a regular frequency, plus with the money you save, purchase more off-the-shelf diesels to increase the frequency further. |

I'd think so too, but I'm sure that NJT wouldn't be pushed to install yet another set of gantlet tracks. (IINM, there's enough room to put in passing sidings there, too.) On that line, there used to be a station at Weequahic as well. |

Hate to burst your bubble, but the guys on Trainorders.com say the Montreal AMT had 3 in service, 1 derailed in a tunnel, and CNR banned them from operation. As for NJT, scuttlebut I heard from someone who is very reliable says due to dynamic oscillation forces, Amtrak will not allow them to go at any sufficient speed, and in electric mode, can only handle 6 MLV cars. I have no idea if any of that is remedial. |
