It has nothing to do with being "tough enough." there have been recent incidents of operators, both train and bus being assaulted by unruly passengers which is why buses are now being equipped with protective screens which while not as secure as a T/O's operating cab offer some degree of protection. Many years ago in London, a group of soccer fans disappointed at their team's loss attacked a LT driver pulling him out of the cab and throwing him on the track. As a result, all London underground trains now have an interlock preventing the train from taking power unless the cab door is locked. Even in genteel England it seems that transit personnel need protection so it's no surprise that many T/Os want it here. |
