Not only is it none of my business, it happened 30 years ago... I'm interested in having some passion about something, but it's pretty hard these days since there's not much I can do about anything at all--not even public transport. And let me tell you, immigration, race, and crime issues are more complicated than public transport--the constituencies much more fragemented including some quite unlikely ones having a position that entrenches them. There are some things that you and I probably agree that needs to change. How do we go about changing them with a coalition of two? |

Very pleasant crowd of older Italian and Jewish people, some with grandchildren. No screaming, profanity, or messes. Friendly employees. I wonder if I can afford to live in Whitestone some day.... |

Frankly I don't have much of an opinion--I see in Newsday too that there's shootings there and that they're buying this ShotSpotter system (which makes me wonder why NYC isn't buying). As far as I am concerned, Brentwood is just an average unknown neighbourhood with a reputation (largely thanks to you)--how am I really supposed to feel about it? I probably don't hear about the shootings in North Haven because you don't post about it. What part of LI are you from? I'm from New England, not really from here at all. Just a transplant. I should care about Bridgeport, North Haven, New Britain, and Danbury, but I just can't bring myself to actually care beyond a passing thought once in a while as I drive on I-95/I-91. |

For example, that immigrant killing was in Patchogue. The pharmacy shooting was in Medford. Riverhead's downtown is all but abandoned--I don't know if it just looks bad or if it's actually dangerous. Towns like Centrereach, Coram, Middle Island, and Mastic have their own issues. I don't know that there is such a thing as a completely safe town. Even walking around at night I think I have to watch for ambushing teenagers who are probably just after an iPod or whatever. Sometimes I wonder which kind of crime bothers me more--a shooting, or quality-of-life crimes like teenagers stealing iPods. Just recently there was a murder of a teenager in Bay Shore, and a few months ago there was a home invasion in East Islip where the invaders were shot dead by the homeowner. It's East Islip for goodness sake. I am not sure how I am supposed to feel about that--other than to hope that it wouldn't happen to me... What's with the British English? It's what I was learnt at school, the Queen's English. |

Yesterday, some guy was shot in the back in Roosevelt and witnesses reported the actor was an 'unknown black man" who fled north on Anna Street in a quote dark vehicle unquote. You're right, Nassau County is catching up to western Suffolk in gang activity. Did they ever find that Japanese compact with tinted windows that was used in the shootings in Brentwood early this year? |

For the last time, my family did not leave Islip (just plain Islip, not "The Islips") because of blacks and Hispanics. There were already plenty there when they moved in. They needed a bigger house. The Brentwood house was okay for perhaps a family of five, but there were eight (my aunt, cousin, and grandmother, plus at one point my great grandmother and grandfather before they passed away).They'd gone to the movies one night in Islip and walked around town, and fell in love with the house that would become our Islip home - and one that had well over 10 people living there at one point during a summer in the '80s. They had no intention of moving at the time and hadn't looked elsewhere. We moved out of that house for a smaller house, still in Islip, in 1993. My mother liked the Brentwood public schools much better than Islip. Come high school, she sent my oldest siblings (who had been schooled at both Brentwood and Islip schools) to private schools. My youngest sister and I went to Catholic school instead of public. My oldest sister moved back to Brentwood in the late '80s and lived there until the late '90s. Both of my nephews went to Brentwood public schools. |
