For the last time, my family did not leave Islip (just plain Islip, not "The Islips") because of blacks and Hispanics. There were already plenty there when they moved in. They needed a bigger house. The Brentwood house was okay for perhaps a family of five, but there were eight (my aunt, cousin, and grandmother, plus at one point my great grandmother and grandfather before they passed away).They'd gone to the movies one night in Islip and walked around town, and fell in love with the house that would become our Islip home - and one that had well over 10 people living there at one point during a summer in the '80s. They had no intention of moving at the time and hadn't looked elsewhere. We moved out of that house for a smaller house, still in Islip, in 1993. My mother liked the Brentwood public schools much better than Islip. Come high school, she sent my oldest siblings (who had been schooled at both Brentwood and Islip schools) to private schools. My youngest sister and I went to Catholic school instead of public. My oldest sister moved back to Brentwood in the late '80s and lived there until the late '90s. Both of my nephews went to Brentwood public schools. |
