That reminds me, I went to a birthday party at the Plattduetsche Club recently, home to the many Gottscheer picnics I went to as a child. The place is a lot smaller than I remember lol.Yeah, I haven't been in that place since I was a kid! I was surprised it was still there a few years ago when I went past. Well, there are a lot of people from the country's of the former Yugoslavia in Ridgewood now so I guess that's what keeps it going. Perhaps a lot of the Polish too? Nothing to do with Gottscheer, but on the topic of Ridgewood, I heard that it's gotten so Polish now there, that in St Matthias Church, they actually have the Polish masses upstairs in the "Upper Church", the nice ornate church, and the English mass is downstairs in the cavelike Lower Church!! |

Hahahahahahaha! Yeah, this is true.By the way, "Mastic-Shirley" isn't a place, it's either Mastic, Mastic Beach, or Shirley. "Mastic-Shirley" is just the name of the LIRR train station, probably a concession made when they closed the old Mastic Train Station in the 50's or 60's and opened up the new train station on William Floyd Parkway in Shirley. It was probably done to avoid confusion back then, as Mastic's station was abandoned. Much like the Deer Park station isn't in Deer Park anymore, although there they didn't call it Deer Park-Pine Aire. |

Shirley is probably "slightly" better than Mastic, which is better than Mastic Beach, but yes, same general idea all around.Oddly, the Mastic-Shirley Train station is in Shirley, technically, the station should be called "Shirley-Mastic", but again, it must have been done that way because when they opened the current location, they abandoned the Mastic Station which was originally the next station after Bellport (although at one time there was also a Brookhaven Hamlet station in between too, but that's another story). |

Yup, and the Romanians, etc in the 80's, and so on. But now the "old timer" Germans are pretty much just about gone. The Puerto Ricans began replacing the Romanians and Croatians by the 90's, and the 2000's has seen the Romanians, Puerto Ricans, and Croatians replaced by the Serbians, Albanians, and mostly the Polish. There are probably more blond haired-blue eyed people in Ridgewood now than at any time since the 50s or 60's. Time marches on. |

Do you remember Triangle Hofbrau in Richmond Hill? I loved that place as a kid.In fact, I always loved that section of Richmond Hill and thought it would be a great place to live. Besides Triangle Hofbrau, you had JAHN'S, the LIRR railroad station, the old movie theater, and the Jamaica "el". It was an interesting intersection. |
