The internet lets them know about the world around them, makes having an oppressive government difficult, in countries like Iran where the state controls the media the internet is seen as an enemy. Where people can freely think criticize and most importantly organize opposition. Thats what the internet does...

You, olog and smaz keep ignoring that and you're basing your fears on a possibility not fact. You think Islamists might take over egypt...but its based on fear and paranoia. Act only on facts not on fear.

And Iran's been helping Hamas for ages.

Stratfor Red Alert

Red Alert: Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood

January 29, 2011 | 1655 GMT

The following is a report from a STRATFOR source in Hamas. Hamas, which formed in Gaza as an outgrowth of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood (MB), has an interest in exaggerating its role and coordination with the MB in this crisis. The following information has not been confirmed. Nonetheless, there is a great deal of concern building in Israel and the United States in particular over the role of the MB in the demonstrations and whether a political opening will be made for the Islamist organization in Egypt.

The Egyptian police are no longer patrolling the Rafah border crossing into Gaza. Hamas armed men are entering into Egypt and are closely collaborating with the MB. The MB has fully engaged itself in the demonstrations, and they are unsatisfied with the dismissal of the Cabinet. They are insisting on a new Cabinet that does not include members of the ruling National Democratic Party.

Security forces in plainclothes are engaged in destroying public property in order to give the impression that many protesters represent a public menace. The MB is meanwhile forming people’s committees to protect public property and also to coordinate demonstrators’ activities, including supplying them with food, beverages and first aid.

Freedom of expression

Israel shares your concerns

“If a hostile regime takes over in Egypt, the IDF will need to restructure itself and would be pushed to the limit in its ability to deploy adequate resources on the various fronts,” one defense official said.

Israeli concerns regarding Egypt relate to several issues but focus on the long-term strategic effect Mubarak’s downfall would have on the country and the Muslim Brotherhood’s potential to take over the country. The Brotherhood has said that one of the first things it would do would be to rip up the peace treaty.

I support nonviolent, peaceful protest as the preferred means to effect political change. Mohandas Gandhi employed nonviolent protest against the greatest empire in history, and it worked.

Britain and other European countries were in the process of decolonization anyway. If Britain wanted to hold on to India, it could have done so, and an emaciated man on a hunger strike would not have stopped them.

The level of ignorance suggested by this statement is truly astonishing. Your dismissal of the world-historical Gandhi as nothing more than an "emaciated man on a hunger strike" is trite and condescending. Gandhi's use of peaceful, non-violent protest and civil disobediance changed the course of human affairs in the world, and led to the birth of a free India. His methods of resisting oppression have been successfully practiced the world over. Gandhi taught the world that it is possible to change things without resorting to physical force.

Great Britain could not have "held on to" India in the face of such determined, popular resistance. She did try, using greater and greater level;s of violence, but in the end, the work of this brilliant man (Gandhi was actually an attorney by trade) brought millions of his countrymen to his cause, and he prevailed.
