If Britain wanted to hold on to India, it could have done so, and an emaciated man on a hunger strike would not have stopped them. The level of ignorance suggested by this statement is truly astonishing. Your dismissal of the world-historical Gandhi as nothing more than an "emaciated man on a hunger strike" is trite and condescending. Gandhi's use of peaceful, non-violent protest and civil disobediance changed the course of human affairs in the world, and led to the birth of a free India. His methods of resisting oppression have been successfully practiced the world over. Gandhi taught the world that it is possible to change things without resorting to physical force. Great Britain could not have "held on to" India in the face of such determined, popular resistance. She did try, using greater and greater level;s of violence, but in the end, the work of this brilliant man (Gandhi was actually an attorney by trade) brought millions of his countrymen to his cause, and he prevailed. |
