They have ties in Lacrosse (I think), Hockey (see BU 3 vs. Cornell 3), FOOTBALL (it happens from time to time), and Soccer. Once it gets to knockout stages, ties get replaced by in football hockey and lacrosse endless sudden death overtimes, and in soccer by overtimes and shootouts.

The way for deciding tiebreakers in hockey in the regular season though needs to change; a shootout should not decide a playoff spot.

I watched some of the US-England game on a TV monitor at the gym yesterday. It wasn't live, so I knew the outcome, but it was still quite interesting to watch. The best part: the lack of incessant commercial breaks for cars, beer, mutual funds and limp-d*ck drugs.

I agree. The final rounds of group play will have a lot more subplots and possibilties because of ties. A team may have to win while another can advance with a tie and that increases drama and differing tactics.

Yes - except for soccer and basketball.

Soccer is low scoring and has no sense of strategy or a clear winner. Basketball requires no skill - anyone can get the ball in the basket if they are tall enough to reach it

Incorrect. It just means that you don't understand the sport and its strategy.
I don't understand cricket or hurling, let alone the strategy involved but that's because of my lack of knowledge of those sports, not because there is no strategy. You are confusing your ignorance of the sport with lack of strategy.

If I don't like it to begin with why should I bother learning about it. I learn about sports that I do like such as baseball, NFL football, horse racing, and F1 racing.

Have you ever played basketball??

Yes but none of us were tall enough to just walk up to the basket and dunk the ball in. Real skill was required. IMO Player's height is as much or more of a contributing factor than skill in the way the professional game is played.

Same here. But I don't go around saying that sports that I don't like or never followed (like cricket or hurling) lack strategy just because I don't understand them.

Height only increses the probabilty to succeed at the highest levels. In the college ranks and even HS, extremely tall guys are a dime a dozen. Only the very skilled ones progress to a higher level.

They don't say it but they act is if that were the case. Like where he asked why he should bother learning soccer as if someone had asked him to.

If we have a thread about the NBA or the NHL the people that don't like the NBA or NHL likely won't post in it, but whenever there is a soccer thread people feel obligated to let everyone know how much they dislike soccer almost as if they have somehow been forced to watch it. And it's not just here it's everywhere. You can start a soccer thread on practically any forum and people will post how much they dislike it.

That's because hard core soccer fans are just that, hard core. It seems you either drool over soccer, or you hate it, there's no middle ground.
That isn't the case with NBA or NHL, you don't have the absolute rabidness of fans in those sports. And yes, you do hear many people complain about how "boring" hockey is, or how they have no interest in basketball.

I'm in the middle. I like soccer, but it's not my favorite sport and there are lots of people like me. It's not even my second favorite sport. The World Cup is my favorite sporting event though.

And there most certainly are "rabid" NBA and hockey fans. They just can't afford to go to the games! ;)

Also, while people might mention that they don't like basketball or hockey it's not like soccer where people are so adamant about it. So they don't like soccer? Big deal, don't watch. I really do think that it's some patriotic thing where they've heard that soccer is the "next big thing" and how the rest of the world wants us to play soccer for many years so they go out of their way to prove that wrong. Notice how many people use words like "un-American" while mentioning how much more they like American sports. The truth is that the rest of the world, while surprised that we aren't into soccer, don't really care one way or the other.

In that case I am PROUD to be a typical American. Soccer is a foreign invader.

Besides there is no way to make money on it like you can with 10x10 grid-style office or bar pools for football and baseball. The low scoring makes most number combinations unlikely, therefore no sense in throwing money away on such pools if anyone even ran them

They'll do better when Pirlo (who's also kind of old) comes back. I don't see them beyond the second round. They would certainly win the Over-30 World Cup. Perhaps FIFA should organize such a thing.
The only spot where age is a good thing is in goalie, but Buffon got hurt and they had young Marchetti in the second half.

Mexico goalkeepers train with NFL balls, prepare for confusion
By Brooks Peck

Just about everyone (except Adidas employees and Adidas-sponsored Kaka) has been moaning about the World Cup ball -- goalkeepers in particular -- saying that it feels weird, moves unnaturally, and may cause bunnies to spontaneously combust. Even though it has produced only 18 goals in the first 11 matches of the tournament. Yet, there have been a few prominent goalkeeper bloopers already. Though England goalkeeper Rob Green manfully declined to blame the ball for his goof-up against the U.S., Algeria coach Rabah Saddane did the exact opposite after Faouzi Chaouchi's gaffe handed Slovenia a win.

So to combat this overblown issue, Mexico's goalkeeping coach is employing a different training device -- NFL balls.

At Monday’s practice, Mexico goalkeeping coach Alberto Aguilar used NFL footballs in a drill to better prepare his players for, well, that which you can never really prepare for.

Yes! Next teams will start training with frisbees, meatballs and copies of Stephenie Meyer books to prepare for the things they can never really prepare for even further.

But as unusual as the World Cup ball may be, it seems that training with a ball that's a different shape is kind of overcompensating for the problem. I mean, as unpredictable as it's claimed to be, could the World Cup ball possibly move like an oblong-shaped ball? If it does, Aguilar is a genius. If it doesn't, Mexico's goalkeeper could be blaming it for acting too much like a normal ball.

The whole world hates those horns. I've been reading English and Italian articles and emailing with people overseas. Olog posted a German article (from real media outlets). They all say the same things: the vuvuzelas suck.

In normal games you get a crowd crescendo when a team makes a run or when something controversial happens (a bad foul, a bad call, etc).
You can hear a fired up crowd when their team is playing well or a player does something cool.

With the stupid horns, it's the same drone at all times.

I don't believe that they were as common four years ago (as they're something that, at least on some level, is "local" to South Africa).

I agree. And I know someone is importing the Lucha masks, so they probably imported the "Lucha horns" too. I think they are fun for five minutes, but not all the time.

I'm not saying that I have any dislike towards soccer. However, if given a choice between watching the NFL, MLB, NBA, or NHL or watching soccer; I'd watch the NFL, MLB, NBA, or NHL.

Also, I'm all for crowds going crazy and getting energetic at pivotal moments in the games. Hell, I know I do. But a constant "drone" of a horn that is mildly annoying anyways is just not something that I'm really a fan of.

They thankfully didn't have them in Germany four years ago. That tournament was textbook from a fan and organizational standpoint.

Many fans bring instruments at games and make noise but it's varied (drums, different types of horns, etc) and they play them during certain parts of the game in an organized fashion. It's actually breaking out in music in spurts. It's not 90 minutes of mindlessly blowing that awful thing.

KCBS radio up here was doing a report on them that I was listening to on the drive home. They had a reporter scour the Bay Area looking for a store that sold them. Apparently, the one store that does sell them was close to being sold out.

But the World Cup isn't simply watching soccer.
I can understand liking the NFL, MLB, etc over watching the MLS or the European soccer leagues during the course of their normal yearly seasons but the WC is only every four years for a month and national honor rests on the results.
English national pride was wounded on Saturday. Ours was greatly enhanced. It may sound insane and probably is, but I didn't create the world and humanity as it is.
