I had the pleasure of working in the same room with her and talking to her when I first got into the business. She was EXTREMELY helpful and very nice to me as an egg. I'd like to think it's precocious senility that took its toll because she certainly wasn't like this back in 1969 at all. She was truly one of a kind. |

Jim DeMint is trying to do this to GOP Senate Leader Mitch McConnell right now; Chuck Schumer is very quietly maneuvering to succeed Harry Reid if the Majority Leader were to be unseated, but not if Dick Durbin has anything to say about it. |

Trent Lott said that Strom Thurmond would have made a good president. Since Thurmond was a strong segregationist, some seized upon that as a pretext to force Lott from his leadership role. What they failed to take into account is, first, whether he actually believed what he said or was he just flattering an old birthday boy OR was it that in the context of the era when Thurmond was a viable candidate, segregation in this country was, regrettably, the norm.
