Trent Lott said that Strom Thurmond would have made a good president. Since Thurmond was a strong segregationist, some seized upon that as a pretext to force Lott from his leadership role. What they failed to take into account is, first, whether he actually believed what he said or was he just flattering an old birthday boy OR was it that in the context of the era when Thurmond was a viable candidate, segregation in this country was, regrettably, the norm. Either way, Lott chickened. He should have never folded his tent. |
