Re: I wouldn’t fly to DC

Regulation got us the status quo with Amtrak and freight railroads. It would make no sense for Amtrak to exist if railroads got deregulated to the point where they could operate passenger service again because the private railroads could do it again.

Amtrak has stupid routes, but their budget isn't big enough to funnel money to hamas and the taliban. That's the type of stuff being erased.

"...because the private railroads could do it again."

But they wont. Strip all those regulations and the freight railroads still would not want to run passenger trains. Passenger/intercity trains are proven moneylosers worldwide. I cant think of one country that dosent give $$$ handouts to support the running of its passenger trains.
Back to the USA, the cost of labor alone would be a big enough deterrent to keep freight RRs running freight trains and not passenger.
The bottom line is freight RRs would not want to take on an operation thats been a proven money loser since WWII regardless of any regulations that may be lifted.

"But they won't" even if deregulated? Why are you arguing in circles?

Passenger trains are not "proven money losers"; they lose money when the railroads are punitively taxed and regulated. Why are you repeatedly ignoring my main point?

You don't have a basis for disagreement other than proof by assertion. Can you explain just how private railroads would not re-embrace passenger rail operation after a massive deregulation, and can you explain how passenger rail losses are not due to over-regulation?

Can you cite any specific regulation(s) that would have to go away to make freight railroads actively pursue reviving passenger service ? IIRC, when Amtrak was created, I don't recall any freight railroads (with the exception of the Southern) bemoan the loss of passenger trains while demanding that those regulations be rolled back. Did they complain to Uncle Sam how removal of their passenger trains would hurt their bottom line?
I don't think so.

"Strip all those regulations "

"Back to the USA, the cost of labor alone would be a big enough deterrent"

Howso? You stripped all of the regulations.

That's one of the points I was trying to make. Some people seem unable to think critically.

Show me the connection between govt regulations and the cost of labor as it applies to private RR companies resuming carrying passengers?

regulations don't add to the cost?

What do you think stops us from having pullman porters today?

What do you mean, show you? It's all around you! Never mind the fact that you can see it yourself by looking at the CFR lists online.

PS. You don't ask one to prove a negative.

Once again, show me the specific regulation(s) that drove away the passenger business from the Freight RRs. I don't know what it is. Apparently you do. So share your knowledge. I don't have the time to plow thru any and all "CFR" list.
