Very Pessimistic About 2024

Posted by Mitch45 on Fri Dec 29 11:31:51 2023

I just don't have high hopes for 2024. Hate is rampant and largely unchecked, crime goes unpunished, the streets and subways are becoming filthy once again and fear has returned to the streets of the city. I don't even have the comfort of escaping to my sports teams as the Giants stink and the Mets are probably going to be lousy again in 2024.

Crime and lack of punishment is running rampant. The irony is that the Libs who vote in those responsible for making this happen are the softest and easiest targets. Antisemitism is also running unchecked, in fact, encouraged by the Dems/Libs.

It isn’t. Crime was up, but it’s back down.

Antisemitism has always been an issue, people are just finally paying attention. The exception is in schools, where it HAS reached a fever pitch.

The Giants will definitely won't be strong next season, but yet again... they will have a good opportunity pickup a top QB in the draft. I'm hoping that they resist any urges to pursue a current veteran QB, and largely build around a draft pick. Also... resist any urges to do a Daniel Jones 2.0 type pick. Obviously they need to build a decent o-line. If they address this now... they can be nicely positioned down the road.

I don't mind having a vet QB that the rookie can learn from. I don't want to see them overpay for a Baker Mayfield-type. The difference between Top 5 and Top 10 QB is greater than the difference between Top 10 and Top 50 QB.

I don't mind either as long as that veteran QB is in the building, and can truly mentor the new guy about both, NFL QB 101 and the NYG system. It makes for a nice transition, but if they decide (during this offseason) that D. Jones is not in their long term plans... I hope they don't do something like pursuing a high dollar veteran QB. Not saying they need to pursue the top picks, but they're plenty of talented QBs coming out of the '24 draft class, and I hope the Giants will draft one of them.

Crime seems to be down from its 2020/2021 peak, both in New York and nationwide. It's actually surprising that New York has benefitted from this trend, given how soft on crime it is, but I suppose there's no arguing with a good thing. Based on my somewhat limited experience, I both live and work in Suffolk County, I haven't really noticed the streets and subway getting dirtier, but views may differ.

As I've said many times before the city's biggest risks by far are WFH and the loss of factories, but that's nothing new.

My employer requires people to come in three days a week but has nevertheless massively cut its floor space.

How did they do this? By dramatically increasing density:

- No offices.
- Not even dedicated desks. Every day when you come in you pick an empty desk in the field of 6-desk cubicles.

I can't buy a cheap pair of underwear or socks at my local Target without waiting for store person to unlock the case.
They've closed the 2nd entrance to Target permanently, the self serve registers are still there working with the one clerk to address problems but they have made the exit there an emergency exit only.

I am surprised they haven't locked up the food yet the way prices are. Meat is still out in the open for taking but socks are locked up. Figure that one out.

Target had a massive traffic drop in the south after their new bathroom policy was announced and people boycotted.

Targets CEO said that they don't know the reason for the disparity in revenue and couldn't figure it out, but was sure it had nothing to do with that.
Target also announced a change after their stores were burned down in 2020 to redesign the layout, because apparnetly having the pharmacy in the middle was deemed "racist" to the board.

Target will close and blame amazon, and not what you mentioned.

Even pre-pandemic my employer had already taken steps to reduce on-site office space by converting some areas into mixed use space that can be reserved. Nowadays most positions that don't requiure a presence on-site are classified as either hybrid and remote.

That sort of desk sharing was once called "hoteling," though I haven't heard that term in a while. Of course I can remember when WFH was "telecommuting."

My view is that while hybrid work is less economically destructive than full-time WFH it can still wreak havoc in some places, especially NYC with its eggs in one basket economy.

My view is that while hybrid work is less economically destructive than full-time WFH

But it isn't less destructive to the real estate industry. My employer has managed almost all the space reduction they could achieve, while still mandating extensive presence at the office.

If they had X square feet to begin with, now they only need maybe 0.4X square feet. They can't reduce below maybe 0.2X square feet no matter what, so they've achieved 75% of the possible reduction already, without allowing WFH.

In all probability the corporate office rather than individual store managers make those decisions. They have lists of "high shrink" items that get locked up, and in some cases there are no obvious explanations for why shoplifters target certain items. For instance, Oil of Olay has been a high theft item for many years, even as more expensive cosmetics are left alone. And in other cases the reasons are apparent: powdered baby formula is almost always locked up, not because desperate moms steal it to feed their infants, but because drug dealers use it as an extender for cocaine.

I know that Target store well. A couple of years ago, I saw a man checking himself out at the quieter side of the store when that entrance was still open. He scanned a couple of products and paid from them. While the "remember to grab your receipt" recording played, he dumped all the other items still in his shopping basket directly into a couple of plastic bags, picked everything up, and walked right out.

The weight sensor surfaces at that store's self-checkouts don't enforce anything for some reason. They all seem to be disabled.
