This is probably true, but you do realize the religiousness of it has nothing to do with any of it. Its all done secularly. It started in American culture to what it is now (and yes has spread to much of the western world at least more recently. Furthermore, it's safe to say that most of the people spending on 'Christmas" presents aren't the least bit religious. |

It's like watching an animal in the zoo.He gets about 5 people to actually respond to his posts, and he thinks he actually has made a statement. He's forgetting all those that don't even attempt to get involved in his nonsense, much less thinking the few (like you and bingbong for example) that egg him on, yet don't participate in his rants either aside from "egging him on" when he is involved with flooding the board with posts with those 5 or so people that waste their time on him. |

They weren't giving presents to eachother. How do you know they didn't give gifts to each other? Regardless, the tradition of giving gifts at Christmas is rooted in the gifts the wise men brought to baby Jesus, probably because it was already a pagan tradition to give gifts in celebration of the solstice. Giving prsents on Christmas was basically invented (at least exploioted) in the early 1900's by American Retailers. No it wasn't. St. Nicholas was giving gifts in the fourth century C.E., and nearly the entire Christian world was giving presents by the tenth century. |

Yes, St Nicholas was giving gifts, but not at Christmas. In Holland, until it very recently, they did gifts on St Nicholas Day, Dec 5th. Nothing to do with Christmas. Christmas was a religious holiday. Americanization changed that in much of the West. And American Retailers invented it. |

What I'm saying is it (routine gift giving, especially for children) happened earlier than that. And it really didn't take off until the thirties. FDR had retailers and manufacturers promoting Christmas gifts as a way to increase consumer demand. |

Are you trying to argue an agreed to fact. The Depression (here's a quick thumbnail narrative on the problems that led to the crash, all of which existed long term before 1929)changed American society. FDR saw holiday gift giving as a way to increase consumerism, so he got the private sector to promote it, setting the stage for the retail excess we live through yearly today. |
