Adding sentences for INTENT of ANY crime is long standing practice of every justice system in the world including ours.A person who kills with the intent to enrich himself gets more time than somebody who kills in a fit of rage. Somebody who steals with the intent of splurging on fancy clothes gets more time than somebody who steals to feed his child. Similiarly somebody who assaults with the intent of terrorizing a person of a religion he hates get more time than somebody who assaults somebody because they got in a heated argument. It's one of those "nothing to see here" things. Nobody is criminalizing beliefs anymore than they are criminalizing the freedom to become rich or the liberty to buy fancy clothes. |
