They thought mask mandates were a good idea at the time

They were a good idea. It was a minimally intrusive way to save hundreds of thousands of lives, if not millions.

And if people had continued to wear them longer in crowded indoor situations, the covid mutations wouldn't have caught on and spread as well as they did.
