MTA BUS Takeover |
|
Posted by hound on Sun Apr 13 20:11:34 2008 It's finally happening-MTA BUs coming to LIB Tuesday for housecleaning. LIB president Neil Yellin is gone-replaced by Joe Smith of MTAB. Buses to be overhauled & repainted without orange stripe, diesels rebuilt, facilities improved, drivers & mechanics retrained, bus stops improved & relocated, etc. This was all confirmed by MTAB management during tour of Grand Ave. facility today. |

As for the renumbering of the buses now in the charge of the MTA Bus Company, if Westchester's Bee Line System came into the fold, then those buses should be prefixed with the letter W for Westchester, those from Long Island Bus, with the letter L and any vacant number series that may be available should be used as well. |

Letters used by NYCTA or MTA-BUS match their perspective borough, so N is just fine for Nassau. Otherwise, people would be confused.Example, L4 FREEPORT sounds odd, leave those route numbers for WMATA, CTransit, etc. It already consfusing enough. Charlie - BFTA |

Posted by BusMgr on Mon Apr 14 09:04:09 2008, in response to MTA BUS Takeover, posted by hound on Sun Apr 13 20:11:34 2008. This really doesn't seem to make sense from a management perspective. It is commonly accepted in most customer-oriented businesses that decision-making authority be vested in employees as low in the management chain as possible in order to provide the most timely and responsive actions possible. Only those functions absolutely common to all facilities (such as general policy, shareholder services, etc.) should be centralized and consolidated at the business's headquarters.Adding a layer of MTA bureaucracy at the top of Long Island Bus will likely increase the response time and create situations where it will take longer for decisions to be made. At the same time, absent some real structural changes, the benefits of centralizing high level management may not be there. For example, fiscal policy (such as the level of county subsidy provided) is decided by Nassau County. Unless MTA gets control over Nassau County's finances (something I imagine few Nassau County voters trust of the MTA), the high level management decisions will have to keep coming from the County. Finally, there may be some Federal equal protection issues if MTA Bus Company becomes a "regional" authority. With New York City Transit Authority and Metropolitan Suburban Bus Authority, the service areas of the two authorities were New York City and Nassau County respectively, and Title VI requirements could be easily met. If MTA Bus Company becomes a regional authority serving the bus needs of the entire 7-county service area. Any unserved minority areas with the 7-county area could conceivably make the argument that MTA Bus Company is violating Title VI. Local transportation is best provided with local authorities, along with coordination with neighboring authorities at the overlapping fringes. Regional transportation (e.g., commuter rail, regional express bus) is really the only transportation that should be provided by regional authorities. |

I think he's referring to the fleet number (and not route numbers). For example: Bee Line's 425 would become W425 and LIB's 312 would become L312.But, now that you mention route numbers, I think it would make sense to add a W prefix to Bee Line routes numbers if/when they are absorbed into the MTA. Years ago NYCTA (arrogantly, IMO) seem to take upon themselves to add a W prefix to Westchester route numbers on their maps. |

Who is the 'MTA Bus management' who told you this?I think we all know this is in the works, but I'm surprised that they are so cavalierly telling a bunch of bus fans this when it hasn't been officially announced yet in the media. My take on this is that there are still some quiet moves going on behind the scenes - buses will not be getting 'MTA Bus' stickers or new paint until an official announcement is made. |

The fleet numbers was exactly what I was referring to; Westchester buses being prefixed with W ahead of the fleet number, Long Island buses with an L ahead of the number, examples W425 for a Westchester Bus and L1771 for a Long Island Bus. Any buses of the former companies that are still in service would be prefixed as follows: G- for Green Bus, C- for Command, N-for New York Bus Service, and so on. NYC Transit buses would not get prefix letters. |

When the Cooper family owned Command,Green, Triboro, Jamaica & would shift buses from one to another the sending company would put their letter ahead of the number or a number 1. Example, when Command sent bus #235 over to Green, the first time it went as C235, when it came back, it returned to 235. the second time it went over, it went as 1235, when it went elsewhere from Green, it went as G235. I have picture proof of this. The late & great Alan Bromberger [gee,I miss him}had documented all of these inter company moves. |

I was told that it's happening this year but no one knows exactly when. All everyone can do(me included) is sit back and watch. But I can tell you this the two agenices are working very close with each other. NYCT bus operators and buses coming and going from Spring Creek on a Daily bases and the fact that 19a training is being done five days aweek instead of four. It's gonna be interesting with LIB because they are sending buses out to Suffolk County to be repainted in their colors and not the tradional MTA livery applied to MTA Bus/DOB. |
