What was the original color of the front passenger seats to the
NYCTA 1962 GMC 5301 model buses in the 2001- 2175 fleet series?
Were they originally Festive Green?

Yes, I believe all the seats in that series were green. The higher numbers which origianlly worked out of Flushing had a slighty different design seat from the lower numbers which worked out of Jamaica. Later TA deliveries (8000s) saw gray and red seats. I think the MABSTOA deliveries had green and red seats, but I'm not sure of this

The seats on the 1963 and 1964 MABSTOA deliveries were green on the front longitudinals, and pink on the rear forward-facings. On the 1965 and 1966 units, the seats were all-longitudinal, all-green.

The seats on the 1963 and 1964 NYCTA deliveries were grey on the front longitudinals, and pink on the rear forward-facings. On the 1966-1968 and 1971 units, the seats were all-longitudinal, all-grey; the exception being the 1969-1970 Flxible order for both NYCTA and MABSTOA, all-longitudinal, all-green.

But the color of the front seats to the 1962 GM 5301's were not
originally light green as with the case with Museum Bus #2151?
Originally did'nt these '62 GMC's have darker festive green seats in the front?

My recollection is that all the early fishbowl TA orders (1-190; 501-805; 1000's; and 2000's) had the lighter shade of green seats. I don't remember any darker shade in those days.

WRONG---The 1964 Flxibles 5000/5100 series were grey in the front and RED in the rear forward facing. The 5600/5700 series were all grey longitudes. Museum Bus 5117 should have RED seats in the rear.

AGAIN on the NYCTA 1963 GM 5303 models were grey in the front and RED in the rear forward facing.

The NYCT 1001-1130 1961 NYCTA Fishbowls had ALL green seat front and rear.

NYCT and MABSTOA 1969 Flxibles had all green seats as well (a shade lighter) and were all longitude.

I stronglt beleive museum bus 2151 should have ALL green seats- that ridiculous red in the rear clearly doesn't match.

To be honest with you I grew up in Bay Ridge Brooklyn and lived near the old Fifth Ave Depot so I only remember bus 2037 which was sent over in her "twilight" years as an extra I guess we had a shortage of buses, and yes the seats matched the interior green on the inside of the bus as close as possaible---the same as the 1000's everything was identical except naturally the bus numbers. You must remember when these museum buses were restored they try to match the paint for the seats as close as possiable.

My favorite bus was the NYCTA 1958 GM Old Looks 9000-9120 with the pink "wrap around fiber glass seats" it was strange seeing an old look with fiber glass seats in those days.

"You must remember when these museum buses were restored they try to match the paint for the seats as close as possible."

Also my same response. These buses were restored not exactly as they originally were.

By the way, was it the 9000 series Old Looks that had the wrap around rear seats? Somehow I keep thinking it was the 7000 series that had those and the 9000's had the regular rear seats. If I remember correctly, the 7000's had 2X2 seating in the front and longitude in the rear with the wrap around. Also there was no seat by the side emergency door. The 9000's had longitude seats in the front and 2X2 seats in the rear. It's been 35 years, I could be wrong about those rear seats.

I believe you're right about the rear wrap-around seats on the 7000s. When I was going to school in Queens, I used Route Q3a (today's Q83) and the 7000s, at least a good number of them, were assigned when new to Jamaica Depot. These did have the wrap-arounds; I remember them because they were so different. I can't remember the 9000s being used when I rode, but perhaps by that time I was tooling around in my first car - a 1955 Packard Caribbean Convertible!

Being from Queens Joe your incorrect to say the least. The 1958 GM Old Looks were EXACTLY like the Queens 7000's EXCEPT the had slide windows instead of the up and down version. 9000-9120. The last few of em had all longitude seating as shown in James Grellers book on NYCT Buses. Hey the Bus Festival is coming up next month just check out museum bus 9098 (my personal favorite) and see for yourself. Maybe I'll bring my MACK-C50 to show off.....!

9000 through around 9022 had front longitude seats, while 9023-9120 had 2X2 seats in front and wrap around seats in the rear, just like the 7000 series.

By the way, the 7000 series were the first TA buses that came delivered with plastic seats. The 6000 series Macks were later retrofitted with plastic seats.

Those Flxibles (9128-9144)had originally been assigned Express routes they had the forward facing soft seats. Didn't last on that assingment to long though. I would assume the 1972 SI 6200's replaced those Fishbowls (3600's) and possiably the Flxible 5000 series as well. All garages only got a handfull of the FLX 9000's so every garage would get new buses.

Yes, a bunch of them (912X-9159) had the 2X2 padded seating. These buses were spent most of their years assigned to Staten Island depots. They were used for express service. In the early 80s a few of them were sent to OA's 100 Street depot. For some reason they also had two-piece destination sign curtains. Also, 9155-9164 had the DD 8V-71N engine, but 9160-9164 were OA buses wtih regular perimeter seating.

Yes, in Spring 1978 on the old R4- which has since been replaced by the S59. I had just started busfanning on Staten Island and was intrigued by this strange and different type of bus.

Was YUK even open at that time? It seemed that every Staten Island bus I rode circa 1977-79 had 'SI' on the fare box.

Four years later I got the same type of bus on FLU's Q16. By that time, it seemed like any Fishbowl and Flxible could be found anywhere. FLU even had 1968 Batwings for the first time in over ten years- and 1969 Flxibles, which had NEVER run on Queens Division routes.

My memories of the early to mid 70s is kinda vague, I mostly remember that some exteriors were green, others blue, I knew the blue was the newer color. I recall the longitudianl front seats, and the changes in the rear door exit lights over the years.

All of that said, 2151 ran out of Jamaica and Flushing, so even if I didn't ride it, I certainly rode its sisters and cousins. And I don't remember those bright red seats for the life of me.

I made it a point back then to track 9090- I rode it to Port Richmond HS frequently on the S44 (S102) and S59 (S4) and on the "specials"- anyone remember them?

The interior lights on those, as well as Blitz 5227 are in the style of R44-46 subway cars- no central strip, all lights behind advertising panels.

I remeber the lights as you say behnd the panels not in the center as a kid with my Grandfather riding a Flxible bus in Brooklyn. I was always a bus nut so i looked at every detail.

Right. Putting the lights behind the ads, rather than overhead started in the mid 70s, more or less concurrent with the advent of the R44-R46s.

In the 1980s, seeing lights down the middle of the ceiling was the giveaway of an older bus. Older Flxibles also had the lights in the middle of the ceiling. On Fishbowl 5227, you can actually see where these lights were removed.

I think I rode one of those 9000 series Flx buses with the 2X2 seating on the Q27 to QCC back around 1980, give or take a couple of years. I don't remember if that was the same bus, but I also rode a 9000 series FLX on the Q27 with a XT fare box. These went to FLU when XT shut, including the fare box.

Now that was a surprise to me, when FLU received those 883X's with batwings and express seating. First saw one on the Q44VP, now the Q79.

As for the 1969 Flxibles at FLU, I had seen one or more from OA, was something like 468X.

The first time I rode a Staten Island route which was GMC 5309A #6112 on old S2. This was around 1980ish and I recall seeing "EW" on the farebox. Around the same time I saw a 70XX series Flxible, I think it was something like 7098 on the old S6. I didn't ride it, but while it was boarding at St. George I was able to see "CA" on the farebox.

"9155-9164 had the DD 8V-71N engine"

I remember well! In fact, I was hoping to see and hear all future TA/OA bus orders powered with that engine, but that was not to be.

Drat.

I miss the #9000 series Flxibles, too.
What a shame they couldn't have kept one for the museum fleet.

9178 & 6313 which were both the last of the mochicans in service for their respective groups (both out of UP) were both to be preserved & were actually stored in the yard that is currently employee parking. However you can thank the local kids for trashing them both to the point that the TA decided they were not worth keeping & were both scrapped.
