What I don't get is why would anyone living in SCARSDALE or BRONXVILLE need to have a registered gun? I mean....lets face it...there are NOT high-crime areas. Yet when you look at the map, there are way to many in those places.


Because the free exercise of individual constitutional rights is dependent on an area's crime rate?

I must have missed the part of the US Constitution that confers a status of extra-constitutionality to certain parts of the country.

A leading figure in Lebanese intelligence said Wednesday that the only enemy of his country is Israel. According to the Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation, Abbas Ibrahim, director-general of the General Security Department, said, “Lebanon’s one and only enemy is Israel.”

Ibrahim also predicted that the crisis in Syria would last a long time, but added, “The humanitarian condition of the refugees arriving in Lebanon from Syria prevents us from closing the border with the neighboring country.”

“We either act in a humane manner or become racist,” he remarked.

But Ibrahim made sure to emphasize who he saw a the real threat to his country. “Whoever has lost the plot should remember to focus his attention south of the border,” the general security chief declared, in an apparent reference to Israel.

Ibrahim stated that there are some 160,000 registered Syrian refugees and some 13,000 Palestinian refugees, who have also fled Syria.

Fears that the Syrian Civil war could spillover into Lebanon have not been totally unfounded. Reports of the transfer of chemical weapons from Syria to Hezbollah strongholds in southern Lebanon have initiated unconfirmed strikes on weapons depots in the region.

And even the economy has begun to suffer because of the neighboring civil war.

No I am not. Those that wish to twist the conversation are.

However, I do think that everyone has a right to know where the guns are in their neighborhood, in order to create a climate of public pressure for their safe handling and storage within the owner's home, and for the sake of protecting police officers from potential gun violence should they come to a call unprepared for.

A map like that would enable a potential homebuyer to choose where to locate based on their own impression of relative safety.

Many years ago there was a very celebrated case where a young girl was held in an underground bunker for, IIRC, 11 days. When she was rescued, it turned out that she had additionally been molested by another man. The original guy is still in prison but the other one, the one who "only" molested her, is out and living not far from here. Since I have no school-age children, I am not entitled, as far as I've been told, to know where this animal lives. This despite the fact that I have a 7 year old grand daughter and a 15 year old geand daughter that stay with me frequently. (The older two can well take care of themselves) Why should this savage know if I own a gun when I'm not entitled to know where he's living? Ring-Ding seems not to understand the disparity or she has a reason for wanting it this way.

If you're trying to say that you have first amendment rights and you have second amendment rights, and why should you have to perform due diligence on one when you don't on the other, you have a point.

But ... that is the essential dichotomy that seems to be drawn between the 2nd amendment and every other one. If you were to say that the first amendment might not address a world with the internet, instant communication among adversaries, and mass communication as opposed to Ben Franklin's old hand-press and delivery by hoss, you will be ground to dust and compared to Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot and Olog.

But when you say the second amendment is [similarly] outmoded, you are on the side of the angels and entitled to ignore it.

Still, I think that the First Amendment is not absolute in some applications, and that the Second Amendment may allow you to purchase a pistol, but can have some reasonable requirements to carry one outside your home and in the public square.

I was required to carry a pistol in some of my regular duties, but I had to qualify on it on the range, and requalify after a year. When I didn't need it for official duties or to give it required TLC, it lived in the arms room where it could nap and talk to its fellow death-dealing armaments.

Similarly, if you owned a private weapon, you had to keep that in the arms room. If you wanted it, you had to check it out and check it back in when you were done. I never heard a single person complain about that.

Archbishop Nichols ends ‘Soho Masses’ after six years

Archbishop Vincent Nichols of Westminster has announced that Masses in Soho organized for gay people are to end.

He also revealed that the church where the Masses took place will be entrusted to the Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham.

The fortnightly “Soho Masses” at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Warwick Street were established by the diocese almost six years ago. They were intended to be “particularly welcoming to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered Catholics, their parents, friends and families”.

Archbishop Nichols said today that, while the Masses will stop, pastoral care of the community will continue at the Jesuit Farm Street church in Mayfair on Sunday evenings.

He also announced that in Lent Our Lady of the Assumption church will be “dedicated to the life” of the ordinariate. The archbishop said: “I hope that the use of this beautiful church, in which the young John Henry Newman first attended Mass, will enable Catholics in the ordinariate to prosper and to offer to others the particular gifts of the ordinariate.”

Pastoral Care
  1. Many people come to the Church with the hope of finding understanding, compassion, mercy and truth. The Church endeavors to respond to their hope through the provision of pastoral care. For many years now the Diocese of Westminster has sought to extend the pastoral care of the Church to those who experience same-sex attraction. This care has been motivated by an awareness of the difficulties and isolation they can experience and by the imperative of Christ’s love for all. In recent years this pastoral care has focused on the celebration of Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Warwick Street.

  2. Over these years, the situation of people with same-sex attraction has changed both socially and in civil law. However, the principles of the pastoral care to be offered by the Church and the Church’s teaching on matters of sexual morality have not. First among the principles of pastoral care is the innate dignity of every person and the respect in which they must be held. Also, of great importance, is the teaching of the Church that a person must not be identified by their sexual orientation . The moral teaching of the Church is that the proper use of our sexual faculty is within a marriage, between a man and a woman, open to the procreation and nurturing of new human life. As I stated in March 2012, this means ‘that many types of sexual activity, including same-sex sexual activity, are not consistent with the teaching of the Church. No individual, bishop, priest or lay-person, is in a position to change this teaching of the Church which we hold to be God-given.’ This is the calling to which we must all strive.

  3. At this point, and after six years of the pastoral care offered at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, it is time for a new phase. Two considerations give shape to this new phase. The first is to recall that the original aim of this pastoral provision at Warwick Street was to enable people with same-sex attraction ‘to enter more fully into the life of the Church’ ‘specifically within the existing parish structures’. The second is the importance of recognizing that there is a distinction to be made between the pastoral care of a particular group and the regular celebration of the Mass. The Mass is always to retain its essential character as the highest prayer of the whole Church. This ‘universal’ character of the Mass is to be nurtured and clearly expressed in the manner of every celebration. The purpose of all pastoral care, on the other hand, is to encourage and enable people, especially those who are in difficult circumstances, to come to participate fully and worthily in the celebration of the Mass in the midst of the whole Church, the people summoned by the Lord to give him, together, worthy service and praise.

  4. I am, therefore, asking the group which has, in recent years, helped to organize the celebration of Mass on two Sundays of each month at Warwick Street now to focus their effort on the provision of pastoral care. This includes many of the activities which have recently been developed and it is to be conducted fully in accordance with the teaching of the Church. Such pastoral care will include support for growth in virtue and holiness, the encouragement of friendship and wider community contacts, always with the aim of helping people to take a full part in the life of the Church in their local parish community. It will not include the organization of a regular Mass. In order to assist in this important work, I am grateful to the Jesuit Fathers of the Parish of the Immaculate Conception, Farm Street who have agreed to make premises available on Sunday evenings and are ready to extend a welcome to this group. I have asked Monsignor Seamus O’Boyle to continue to offer my support and guidance for this group.

  5. At the same time, the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption is being dedicated to the life of the Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham for their groups in central London. I hope that the use of this beautiful Church, in which the young John Henry Newman first attended Mass, will enable Catholics in the Ordinariate to prosper and to offer to others the particular gifts of the Ordinariate.

  6. These new arrangements are to come into effect during Lent 2013.

The name and address of any handgun permit holder “shall be a public record,” he said, reading a section of New York State law. “In my opinion,” he continued, “there is not a lot of room for interpretation.”

These are public records of individuals with handgun/pistol permits in NY State. They are public records. There is no issue with publishing them, and no government can withhold them under FOIA.

Awesome, so we "leave", these jackasses come down from the hills, and they run right into whatever special forces are left behind as "advisors" to the Afghani military. I'd be willing to bet the Afghani air force would likely be quite amenable to having the USAF (or some contractor thereof) continue to provide air traffic control services to their countries, including routine navigation patrols of their country. If a JDAM or SDB should happen to pop off one of those aircraft in the course of those overflights and it should happen to land on one of the resurgent Taliban outposts then such is life, right?

The only valid strategy to beat the backward hicks who harbor terrorists is to elevate those hicks and their surroundings such that terrorism is not an attractive lifestyle. That's what Roosevelt did to the Confederacy with the rural electrification program, and it bought us an almost 50 year respite from their ignorance and bigotry. Unfortunately their uncouth nature has begun to leak through in the past decade or two, but we simply need something else to return civility to them.
