Everyone has the right to know who has guns in their neighborhood, if solely to pressure them into keeping them locked away and unloaded for the safety of their kids. The police should know who has guns should they need to respond to a call, in order to be prepared for the presence of guns.Whoever thinks they did nothing beyond a public service needs their head examined. The right to have a gun does not in any way infer or include privacy rights about it. Back in the 18th century, the government needed to know who had guns so they could roust and draft them into a militia or posse. Who owned a gun was always intended to be public knowledge. |

Actually, I think everyone who has a pistol should be required to take a course and qualify minimally on the weapon. Back in the day I'd sometimes get a coworker who'd tell me he wanted a pistol. I always told them "if you do, get thorough training, or the first victim is likely to be you. Otherwise, if you MUST have a weapon at home, get a long gun." |

When they discover that they and their immediate family are at greatest risk in having the thing in the house, they might think twice or at minimum handle it differently than they otherwise would have.They should also be required to demonstrate basic competency in shooting the thing. During the education process a complete background check (already determined to be legal) could be done. None of this is in conflict with anyone's rights, even a small majority of NRA *members* (not their nutty executive board and lobbyists) agree. |

My school district used to do it, as long as we had children in the system.But I'll ask again: Should a newspaper take it on themselves to publish the names and exact addresses and a map of every sex offender in their circulation area, as is being done with the gun owners? That's kind of different than the targeted naming of offenders in your immediate area. |
