Everyone has the right to know who has guns in their neighborhood, if solely to pressure them into keeping them locked away and unloaded for the safety of their kids. The police should know who has guns should they need to respond to a call, in order to be prepared for the presence of guns.

Whoever thinks they did nothing beyond a public service needs their head examined. The right to have a gun does not in any way infer or include privacy rights about it. Back in the 18th century, the government needed to know who had guns so they could roust and draft them into a militia or posse. Who owned a gun was always intended to be public knowledge.
