Do you honestly think there would be any type of substantial profitable ridership on that line? The abandoned part is only a very small part of the Rockaway Branch. The majority is still in use. It's called the A Train. At one time there might have been some use for that line to the airport. But now with Airtrain there is no need for that. As for as the costs to do it, it would probably cost a small fortune to just clear the ROW. As far as its deteriorating condition and illegal dumping that is the city's fault and it should be cleared for a park or for housing, however the same nimbys who would fight a train would fight those things too. And as a homeowner I couldn't blame them. Although it would never be done I think a better ROW for a transit or light rail line would be the old Vanderbilt Motor Parkway ROW in Queens. At least it's cleared, has overpasses, and best of all, it's East/West. |
