My last ride consisted of a series of last rides. They were taken as part of my own personal excursion back on 4-1-2009:I started off by taking the Q53 to Liberty Ave. I got on the A and rode 4357 from Rockaway Blvd to 80 Street. I was trying to get a particular photo of the R40 Slant at 80 Street but was unsuccessful in doing so. I then boarded 4248 and took it to 104 Street to get my last photos of it on the Lefferts Blvd stretch. I waited for that same train to return and rode 4320 back to Rockaway Blvd. After getting the photo below, I boarded 4178 and rode it to B44 Street. As I got off at B44 Street, I got this photo: Before boarding an R44, I got this photo: That wound up to be the only R44 that I rode on that day. I got off at B67 Street, thus remembering that the Slant Set I had was going to return. While I was there, this came in: That happened to be the 4th R40 Slant set in a row that headed to Far Rock. Minutes later, 4178 returned: I took it back to Rockaway Blvd where I then caught the Q11-Q60 back home. Case and point, 4178 was the last R40 Slant set that I rode in service. As you saw, that day was cloudy, cold, damp and dreary. Much like the way it will be tomorrow minus the cold. If I am unable to get down to the A Line tomorrow, 4178 will forever be the last R40 Slant car that I rode in passenger service. These cars gave the NYC Subway Cars quite a unique look. I enjoyed riding and photographing them over the years and they will be surely missed. If you want to see all of my R40 Slant PHOTOS, you can look HERE. Many of the photos from that day are on there as well. |

I also was around in RTO and ran the tens and IAWTP COMPLETELY. Pre-GOH R46s were the finest and more comfortable rapid transit cars I got my hands on until I went to the PA, especially with the swilleling captain's chair behind the console. UNoverhaulled R32s with cast iron brake shoes or GE-10s with inshot valves installed confidence to those who payed attention. Today's crews don't really know how good or bad the system was back then. As far as I am concerned, the slants were retired in 1988 when I ran my last train on 4th Avenue with axiflow fans, strip map signs, whining 100 HP traction motors that exceeded 50 MPH, braking that wouldn't have sent Layton G to his grave with inshot valves and a blue cloud of smoke for those dead motors. Thundering over those 4 sets of switches into 36th St with no timers and still made the ten car markers. Was a nice system while it lasted |

I thought that the 110 cars painted green were interesting. Somehow, I seem to remember that they had mikes at the conductor stations on the car ends. Those green painted cars were aberrations in their dinosaur days; you had to know them in their earlier days. Doors wouldn't open unless one went to the car and charged it from there. And don't mention HGL's in the winter. Then they could be slow at times; but 10 tens with good motors could beat an R-44 any day.Hey, come to think of it, we almost share a birthday: they're gone; I' still here (knock wood). |

Even though the R-10's have been gone from regular service for two decades now, I can still hear in my mind to this day the sound of their original 3YC air compressors and the thundering roar as the cars just really ripped through the IND "A" line in a blaze of glory during their prime heyday. Yeah, the PA system for the R-10's, which were first installed as early as 1974, had the conductors speaking inside the motorman's cab. My first impression of the use of the R-10's with the PA's was that they sure had a very strong, booming tone when heard inside the car.Of course, and I agree with you, the R-10's at least during the 1950's and 1960's were indeed the "A" train, no doubt. They were just made for each other. -William A. Padron ["Fulton-Lefferts Blvd." or "Mott Av.-Far Rockaway"] |

LOL now that brings back memories of childhood all over again.I remembered I use to take the R30's too when they operated on the C back when the C train operated from Rockaway Park to Bronx. Playing with the roll signs were fun!!! Once the R-32's came in after the GOH and R-44's got their GOH, I knew the R-30's time were up :( It was fun while it lasted. Every time I go to the transit museum, I would play around with the roll signs again to see if it would scroll but of course they're locked down darn :( lol. At least when the R-40's arrive in the museum, hopefully the R-32's to R-42's will be there at the same time. Then we can take our kids to see it at that point and say "hey we use to ride these trains and they were sure roomy compared to today's trains " :P |

They want the AA cars to run on the Rockaway shuttle for technical reasons. The C will not be using 6-car R46's when their R32's are gone. |
