I also was around in RTO and ran the tens and IAWTP COMPLETELY. Pre-GOH R46s were the finest and more comfortable rapid transit cars I got my hands on until I went to the PA, especially with the swilleling captain's chair behind the console. UNoverhaulled R32s with cast iron brake shoes or GE-10s with inshot valves installed confidence to those who payed attention. Today's crews don't really know how good or bad the system was back then. As far as I am concerned, the slants were retired in 1988 when I ran my last train on 4th Avenue with axiflow fans, strip map signs, whining 100 HP traction motors that exceeded 50 MPH, braking that wouldn't have sent Layton G to his grave with inshot valves and a blue cloud of smoke for those dead motors. Thundering over those 4 sets of switches into 36th St with no timers and still made the ten car markers. Was a nice system while it lasted
