Man, do they keep porking up the costs of these projects. The North Shore by itself is supposed to be $78 million per mile, using the $400 million estimate. For an existing railroad with high platforms and third rail. Seawalls appear to cost between $12-24 million per mile, so what's going to cost extra? Why build any railroad along the median of the West Shore Expressway, which is unpopulated, and which nobody can get to? (never mind the approximate cost of $84 million per mile) For these costs, you can tunnel under the Narrows and connect the R train to the south shore SIR, plus go under the Arthur Kill from Tottenville to Perth Amboy to connect with the NJCL. Light rail requires additional maintenance facilities; they can't share with the SIR, unless they convert that to "light rail" as well for who knows how much. |

However...there are projects the MTA should issue debt for because of a good ROI...this is one...but IMO, North Shore should be LRT running to a transfer station by Edgewater (where the South Shore line would have a deep-bored station running into Red Hook and then veering to either the Broadway or the SAS). |

Considering the heftier price and lower probability of the West Shore Line materializing, work on studying it should probably abandoned in favor of pursuing the more realizable North Shore Line.Probably the goal should be to piggyback the North Shore Line project on to the plans for a replacement for the present Bayonne Bridge. Certain lobbies favoring that project can be used to extract funding from DC. It's certainly a porky row to hoe, but these days, it probably represents the more realistic way of actually realizing anything. |

I see that Vito "family values" Fosella has something to do with this. He has more family values than comparable democrats because he has more families. If they can do this to the North Shore, why haven't they done this to some of the right of ways that are wasting away in central Queens? Like the Montauk or the Bay Ridge or even Bushwick branches? There is no subway service in these areas and terrible bus service and horrible traffic congestion. I guess there aren't enough republicans who seem to be the tail that wags the democratic dominated dog of the state legislature. |

Seawalls appear to cost between $12-24 million per mile, so what's going to cost extra?Yes, an existing abandoned railway with portions of the ROW washed out over nearly fifty years of no service, and minimal maintenance of various overpasses. You'll end up rebuilding everything along with new tracks (CWR w/concrete ties), substations, third rail, and platforms and extensive refurbishment of overpasses. Why build any railroad along the median of the West Shore Expressway, which is unpopulated, and which nobody can get to? I think it's a silly idea, but I suspect it's going to be designed around building P&Rs along the West Shore Expressway. IMHO, I'd much rather see a long along the median of the Willowbrook Expressway continuing through the park with a stop for the College of Staten Island and then separated median PROW along Richmond Avenue to serve the Staten Island Mall and ending at the Eltingville Transit Centre. For good measure, I would like to see the Richmond Parkway completed to the Staten Island Expressway as a tolled facility with two lanes in each direction and a wide median. For these costs... Now that's funny. There's no way that $1 billion dollars could cover the cost of a Narrows and Arthur Kill Tunnel along with the rolling stock and other infrastructure upgrades needed for such service. |

You'll end up rebuilding everything along with new tracks (CWR w/concrete ties), substations, third rail, and platforms and extensive refurbishment of overpasses. . . which will not cost $78 million per mile no matter how you slice it. On an existing right of way. (What overpasses? Only place that would be of major concern is the Port Richmond station). The cost being cited in your $78 million/mile estimate is the new redundant light-rail facility, which shouldn't be built at all. I think it's a silly idea, but I suspect it's going to be designed around building P&Rs along the West Shore Expressway Which is a silly notion in and of itself. That's a useless assumption, that everybody's going to drive to the railroad, especially a local railroad. Not unless they want the landfills built on already? IMHO, I'd much rather see a long along the median of the Willowbrook Expressway continuing through the park with a stop for the College of Staten Island and then separated median PROW along Richmond Avenue to serve the Staten Island Mall and ending at the Eltingville Transit Centre Richmond Avenue/SI Mall would be the more ideal places to serve. They're actual destinations, after all. There's no way that $1 billion (dollars)* could cover the cost of a Narrows and Arthur Kill Tunnel You sure? How come tunnels cost a lot less elsewhere in the world? * Redundant use of the word "dollars". |

The "replacement" Bayonne Bridge is a mistake. The only reason for that project is to bring in those super-container ships with imports (imports we are increasingly finding it difficult to afford since the jobs that used to be on our soil are gone, which is a long-term cause of our present recession). We shouldn't even have a container port in Newark Bay; it costs way too much to dredge that bay to unnatural depths. They could have done this years ago. Even have NJT running a diesel service to Cranford and/or West Trenton. But no; they want to do it the hard way (and we gotta be one of the few countries that blows up the costs of LRT on an existing right of way to figures well above the most expensive mountainous segments of high-speed rail alignment). |

We shouldn't even have a container port in Newark Bay; it costs way too much to dredge that bay to unnatural depths. To my knowledge, that's the PANYNJ plan. They could have done this years ago. No argument there. Even have NJT running a diesel service to Cranford and/or West Trenton. West Trenton Line is a quite useful project, but I don't think that SI would sign up for it. Their big interest now is to link to the Jersey City-Hoboken-Bayonne areas, at least from what I've been reading and hearing. So that project would be, from the SI perspective, literally headed in the wrong direction. But no; they want to do it the hard way (and we gotta be one of the few countries that blows up the costs of LRT on an existing right of way to figures well above the most expensive mountainous segments of high-speed rail alignment). I have no doubt that it will be very expensive, judging by the HBLR costs in the past, although if they choose not to do the same operating arrangement as HBLR, the start-up capital cost will be far cheaper, at least if I'm reading these past numbers correctly. If I'm not mistaken, a good sized - I'm forgetting roughly what fraction, exactly - chunk of HBLR costs are operating, not capital. But judging by the fact that they want to connect to Bayonne-Jersey City-Hoboken, they are consigned to choose a mode that is compatible with HBLR. That doesn't mean that they must choose the same mode, but it does imply that they would be constrained to use a mode which is capable of operating using the HBLR clearances, catenary, and signals, etc. If THE project included a station in Jersey City, that might have left open another option for commuter rail, but that has been foreclosed. |

The exteriors are bumpy and rusty and the interiors haven't held up well. Those awful colors of yore are so cheap looking. The whole line needs to be fixed, re-done and renewed. Those costs are inflating every day. The costs are out of control and the result of gree. Our money is worth a third of what it was 50 years ago. Makes no sense. Money is money. But my guess is that the SI study is aiming at a one-seat ride right into and through HBLR territory. There may be some regulatory problems with that, perhaps, although perhaps not. I can't really say since the picture is so hazy at this point. If SI is aiming at merely a connecting service, then they have many more options available to them. Not to mention that NJT blew up that scene by picking low-platform light rail What's wrong with low platforms? |

They should hold back on the West Shore Line for a bit since it's more expensive and at least push for the North Shore L since the ROW is already there and it's cheaper. |

You easily wait more than twenty minutes on bus routes in Manhattan that are supposed to run every six minutes so what do you expect from the SI bus frequency? Isn't the SIR reliable though? No?"A bus is a bus, of course a bus and no one relies on a bus of course unless the bus you talk about is the..." Wait! There isn't one. LOL! |

The whole line needs to be fixed, re-done and renewedWhat's wrong with the platforms, track and third rail? Unless of course you are talking about the North Shore Line. It needs to be fixed up indeed. Rolling stock is rolling stock. We can put NTTs or M7s on there. Light fail? Save it for some other city. |

That will override the pipe-dreamers in SI.I'm not well versed enough in the politics of it to know for sure, but it's a definite problem. PANYNJ could make it happen via the ultimate porker of a Bayonne Bridge replacement, which is about the only way that I see the one-seat HBLR thing happening. If that doesn't work out, though, maybe a commuter rail project could be worked out, although that would probably require cooperation from freight railroads. For the right price and upgrades, though, as long as the line doesn't end up having to go through the huge yard there - is it called Oak Island, or am I mixing it up with another one? - it might be OK. Newark will probably experience plenty of growth too, and a two-seat ride connecting to PATH isn't so awful as a plan B. Piggyback a nice cross-harbor freight tunnel over to the Bay Ridge Line on to the project, and that's not bad at all. |

Dude...I recommend that you give up trying to carry on a "decent" conversation with the likes... You will NEVER get anywhere that resembles a LOGICAL standpoint...no matter what you do...furthermore If EVERYONE did the same...The Troll Supreme might get the hint that only folks with a LIKE MIND enjoy its brand of Bullshit...and it might go away. Word to the wise. |
