What I find bizarre is that Brooklyn College was made the primary name and Flatbush Ave demoted to a secondary-name besides the fact that the majority of signage in the station says Flatbush Ave. "Brooklyn College-bound" trains is how they refer to it in GOs and advisories which is inconsistent. Folks I know from that area never say they're taking it to Brooklyn College. It's always Flatbush or "The Junction".

Yes and R-42 rollsigns also refer to it as Eastern Pkwy which were seen last year around this time when the J terminated there during a weekend GO. However, since all stations signs now read "Broadway Junction" at all three stations and on the map, it really is a lost cause to keep Eastern Pkwy and East NY alive since more and more people will not be sure what you're referring to anymore than 102-104 Sts which is now just 104 Street.

It was called Manhattan Jct until about 1913-14. But all 3 stations have signage that say Broadway Junction and also says that on the map. BUT...Saturday a guy stopped me on the "A" platform and said he was lost. Asked me where 'Broadway-East New York' was...Told him this was it; then he procceded to ask three other people the same thing.

I hate it when someone asks you a question like that and then goes and asks three other people the same thing right in front of you. I once went back to the person and asked him why he was asking others after I told him the answer and he said that he always gets a consensus for taking anyone's advice. Guess he was burnt once. On the other hand, I've heard people act like experts but giving out erroneous information in which case I had to correct them.

I guess they like the convention of Neighborhood first, then Street name, but I agree that it sounds awkward that way. Too bad "The Junction" has always only been used locally. It never made it to any maps that I have seen.

LOL. One of my favorites was a lady I ran into in the tunnel between the 2/3 and 4 at Court St/Boro Hall. She wanted to get to Bergen St. I ask her "Bergen St. on the 2/3 ...or Bergen St. on the F?"

"Bergen St. on the F."

Of course in Brooklyn, that's pretty inconvenient to try and do from Court/Boro, probably better off walking or bussing it. But she's already in the fare control So I give her the best directions possible: "Get the R that's heading to Bay Ridge, and take it to the stop at 9th St./4th Ave. Then go upstairs, get a Manhattan bound F and take it to Bergen." Since there was a map nearby on a billboard, I even showed her so she wouldn't give me that "I've never taken that train before...are you SURE it's going to work??" look.

"OK, so where do I get the train?" Well with me on my way to Junior's via DeKalb, I told her "You can get it in this station, just follow the signs. I'm getting the R too, so you can just follow me."

So she follows me the whole long walk to the escalators for the R, then sees someone else just short of the escalator. Asks them for directions. "How do I get to Bergen St?" And as I'm going down the escalator I hear "Back that way, 2 train..."

Last thought as Im going down the escalator "wrong Bergen St..."

That’s probably why the map says “Queens Mall” which isn’t the real name but hints that it’s the stop for Queens Ctr.

It's also awkward since Brooklyn College isn’t a neighborhood, it’s a nearby college. “Flatbush” is more accurate as a neighborhood name. At all other CUNY stations, the name of the college comes after the street name such as “137 Street – City College” and “Bedford Pk Blvd – Lehman College”. Just another inconsistency.

Many years ago, I recall that the original signage on the IRT entrance to Borough Hall at the corner of Court and Joralemon Sts indicated such Brooklyn destinations as East New York and Vanderveer Park. The latter is the original name of the neighborhood in which Flatbush/Nostrand Ave station is located.

The original destination signs on the R-9s read simply "QUEENS - FOREST HILLS" which was simple and to the point. If I recall, the BMT steels read simply "FOREST HILLS" which was typical of many of the old BMT destination signs which gave only the area in which the terminal was located such as "ASTORIA," "CANARSIE," and "JAMAICA." Even "CONEY ISLAND" reflects this since the official name of the station is "Stillwell Avenue."

For the same reason, DOT resisted putting a sign on the Belt Parkway at Flatbush Avenue saying Kings Plaza, but eventually relented. Someone probably slipped someone at DOT a few bucks to get hem to change their mind.

That original signage gave a hell of a lot more information than today's signage. It was designed to attract people from the street to use the subway without the need for a map, listing all major stops such as Times Square, Grand Central, etc. After the system expanded though, it didn't make much sense since when many more trips became available by transferring and it was not possible to list them all.

It's pretty much been that way since I can remember.

Also keep in mind most stops in Queens on the #7 line do the same

69 Street (Fisk Avenue)
52 Street (Lincoln Avenue)
46 Street (Bliss Street)
40 Street (Lowery Street)
33 Street (Rawson Street)

Plus if you passed by Woodhaven Blvd (my Saturday morning home - aka Queens Center Mall) you'll see "Slattery Plaza" underneath.

These street names no longer exist - however you'll still see them on subway station signs. The only one you'll never see is "Malbone Street" and I think you know why.

I was once, at midnight on a Sunday, standing on an uptown A train. We pulled into Canal St-Holland Tunnel. There were huge signs signs saying the E train was not running there, but rather on the Bway line. And, of course because it was midnight, there were no C trains either. So this lady who was with 3 generations of the family but was clearly the "leader" said really loudly, "No this is not the train we want." I thought of saying "This is the only train running tonight," but I thought that in 20 minutes the rest of the family will have figured out that she knows not of which she speaks. Oh, I was vengeful that night.

(I guess the "Holland Tunnel" part of that station name is gone, too.)
