IIRC, the parent company of Saks and Gimbels (BATUS, the American retailing arm of British-American Tobacco) tried to sell Gimbels but got no (satisfactory?) offers and, instead, closed it down and sold the real estate. The Gimbels New York flagship became A&S Plaza (now Manhattan Mall). The Philly flagship had moved into The Gallery at Market East (its old location across Market is still a parking lot, I believe) around 1982--it was there and its old location leveled when I got to Philly in 1983. It was a sad end to a proud retailer. And, one of many large department US stores with direct connections to subway stations that have been lost. |

I heard from someone that the passageway from 7th to 6th is planned for reopening as part of the proposed T.H.E. Tunnel project, which calls for six more tracks in Penn extending to 6th Avenue/Broadway. The herald square subway station would also be renovated as part of this plan. |

THE project is an NJT project and will go no where near the tunnel on 33rd Street.It is quite likely that NJT will have its own tunnel to HSq since its new tunnels will go right on up to it. As for the 33rd Street Tunnel, that is NOT on city property, it is not, nor ever has been a part of the Subway System, PATH, or LIRR/AMTK/PRR. It is up to Vorando Reality what to do with that tunnel. I forget).You would think extending the tracks or station to 6th would eliminate the need for the passage, as someone else suggested. Unless it's going to be used for access to the tracks (like stairways leading to the new platforms). Herald Sq. was renovated already, and that was when they sealed the passage! Who did you hear this from? |

T.H.E stands for Trans Hudson Express Tunnel project and the Portal bridge project which will add a new three track 50 foot high fixed bridge to the North and replace the current bridge with a 40 foot lift bridge.I don't know too much about it, but a friend was telling me this once. |

Even apart from any architectural value, the bigger loss is of another hotel-- so many have been lost or converted to condos that NYC has trouble competing for conventions. Vegas, Orlando and Atlanta all have more available hotel rooms than NYC and we lose a lot of good business because of it.Even if New York had far more hotel rooms it still would have a hard time attracting conventions because the Javits Center is so small. The passageway was sealed when Gimbles was closed (more or less) It was on Gimbles' property, through their building as a matter of fact, albeit under the sidewalk. When the building was closed the tunnel had to be closed. The present owners have found no need or reason to endure the expense of opening, patrolling and maintaining it. It does appear to have been changes since it was built: The tiles are gone, and the cinder blocks are new. When that building was build cinder blocks had not yet come into existence or usage. It may be kept as a utilities tunnel, or maybe Vorando Realty will do something with it as the rebuild the Hotel PA into something else. But it is their tunnel and only they can open it again, if ever.ROAR |

The Park Lane on Central Park South was once an *infamous* fleabag but was magnificently rebuilt by Leona Helmsley and Harry. The Barbarian Plaza was similarly a hotel that was long in the tooth and short in the comb once but was nicely rebuilt by Best Western. Perhaps the Pennsylvania could be torn out and rebuilt but what it is right now is everything Dave Barry described it as. :(I'm sure it was "moderate" at one time ... Penn Central was a classy operation. Heh. |

First, it has been mentioned in this thread that the Penn hotel has beeb undergoing renovation on a room-by-room basis and the renovated rooms are o.k. Second, when my (grown-up) kids wanted an affordable place to stay for a few days in NYC a couple of years ago, they found it on the WWW, and I asked a Subchatter of my acquaintance whom I know to be a sober and sensible citizen for his view of it. He said the renovated rooms were o.k., and my kids stayed there, and found it o.k. - and convenient, since it so happened they were due to leave NYC by Amtrak to Boston. |

Yesterday, I was back looking around - trying to get a better picture of the passageway with more zoom. Someone stopped me and asked if I was with the MTA. I said no and explained I was trying to take a picture of the passageway. He seemed totally familiar with what was in back of the door. It occurred to me later that he must work for Vornado. He didn't stop me from taking pictures through the slot on the door but, unfortunately, none of them came out any better than the one I have already posted. They were all too blurry. |

A public outrage did work for one of florida's oldest hotels/worlds longest wooden structure which was an old railroad hotel too, between Clearwater and Largo Florida.I think the rail loading dock is still intact in the basement you can see during tours. |
