Say, I Miss The (EE)!

I do miss the old double (E)lizabeth, the BMT version of the IND single (E)lizabeth. Local but a good service, the (EE) ran from 71st Avenue to Whitehall Street during normal hours. The (EE) had a neat color bullet and was the way to get from/to 67th Avenue and Queens Boulevard. Great when it ran R1-R9s.

I liked it better when it ran R-16 - the pre-war stuff was often a mix of the high-number R-4 and the Jamaica R stock that was often bad order. These cars broke down frequently. By the time they made the switcheroo at the end of 1969 the R-4s had gone bye bye (or back to Coney for the "CC" and "D") and the remaining R's blended in with their brethren on the "E" and "F". Of course, we'd always get lucky and catch an R40M on the "EE" - with Brake Test car numbers like CB22, CB23, AS18, AS19 &c and a gorgeous bright orange bulkhead sign.

I agree. I've had a nostalgia for this line since it was eliminated in 1976. However, if we think about it, there's even better service now:

1) There's the W, which is basically the EE routed to Astoria rather than Forest Hills. (I bet if the EE had survived until the 1985 elimination of double letters, it would have been the W)

2) There's the V, a weekday, Queens Blvd local, with an orange bullet, just like the EE.

3)Finally, there is now QB local service to 6th Ave AND Broadway.

The EE was long gone when this pic was taken. R-46 1146 probably hadn't even been built yet.

That was not what I said.

The photo was taken in 1981. The horrible, too-bright blue belt and lack of bandit mask were not on the stock in '76. The 1100s didn't enter revenue service until after the EE was gone.

The EE actually ran M-F from 6am to 8pm between Forest Hills and Whitehall Street. There were additional trains during the rush hours to and from Canal Street. The original equpitment was R-1/9 which did have EE signs but read 8th Avenue Local. The cars that I remember best on this line were the R-16s.

It's interesting that the MTA considered the (EE) an IND line since they could have also called it the (NN). Since Manhattan trunk lines tend to be more prominent then those in the other boros, I consider the old (EE) to have been a BMT line. It would have been yellow on today's maps.

I think that the MTA considered the (EE) the local version of the (E) much in the same way that the (AA) was the local for the (A). They were designating it in relation to the Express service on Queens Blvd rather then in Manhattan where it would have instead been called the (NN).

AFAIK they did not. Queens Blvd's 46s were exclusively for the E & F until the N came to town in August, 1976. This doesn't mean none ever ran in EE service, just that it was not the normal practice. EE had arnines when they were still around, and 16/27/30/40m/42. I am not aware of 32/38/slants being used regularly, if at all.

Before August 1976, when the 46s finally were flooding revenue service, they were seldom seen on routes where Continental or 179 weren't the north terminal. Finding 44s or 46s on the GG wouldn't have been at all odd (though it was mainly 40s/42s at that point), being the F was it's CWPF.

For whatever reason, TPTW avoided sending 46s down Broadway before the 8/76 service changes sent the N to Continental, or up CPW for that matter. Going by that, it is not likely 46s ran in EE service on anything other than a special case basis.

Thank You. This more or less confirms my somewhat foggy memories. I was 8 in 1976.

As I remember 1975-78 {and I generally only rode the subway weekends back then, so I don't think I EVER actually rode the EE :( }, the 46s started on the F, then spread to the E, and finally to the GG.

Immediately prior to the deployment of the 46s, the E & F used Slants and a very occasional R1/9, the GG used 16/27/30s (indistinguishable to my child eyes, sorry) and 40M/42s, which I also couldn't tell apart back then.

But since I liked the 46s back then, and my adopted "grandma" rode the EE (and her name was Karen!), I was sad to learn the EE and K trains died the same day. I hoped back then they'd bring back the EE, with 46s.

A little interesting history. The extension of the letters began in 1960 with the R27. Q was given the honor and logically (Q) would be the express and (QQ) would designate a local. However, QQ quickly became (QB) and (QT). Literally, Q via Bridge and Q via Tunnel. Neat huh? According to Mr. Joseph Brennan's page the (QB) ran 1960-1985, the (QT) ran 1960-1967, the (Q) ran 1964-1967 and since 1986 and the (QJ) ran 1967-1976. I read in Wikipedia that the (QJ) was created by merging the (J) and (QT) routes.
