There's some trade and fan mags from the period around the time of the LRV's development and manufacture that have alot of the history behind all this. |

Boston LRV 3401 demo'd on Shaker without a sale. Might have been interesting if they got those cars instead of the Bredas.A Boston all-electric also took test runs shortly before Shaker ordered their own Pullmans in the late 40's. The car they demo'd might have been started as a Baltimore car The MU equipment reportedly originally ordered from GE for that Baltimore order ended up on the ex-Minneapolis PCC's that Shaker bought.(Dan L. comment?) |

TCRT retrofitted the cars with MU couplers and equipment in their Snelling Shops, I have a pic of SHRT 63, still with it's TCRT large diameter trolley wheel installed that was taken in Minneapolis. Trolley shoes with bronze shoes instead of carbon ones were installed at Kingbury Run shops of SHRT.No Baltimore MU equipment was ever sold to Shaker. The Pullman All-Electric PCC cars came equipped for MU and lacking only couplers, having no front or rear skirts. WH MU couplers were added by TTC. The ex-Louisville cars were made MU by TTC. Delivered to Louisville and Cleveland were as single units. |

BUDD was already soured on transit. Orders were few and far between in the 70's--there weren't as many transit operations back then. Remember at least once back then they deferred prime bidding to GE and simply did the body work on one of the M classes for MTA As to Boeing, while the LRV's were CRAP, concurrently they were building CTA L cars in the same plant. Those are running off the miles. What does this tell me? CTA had a very clear and well honed idea what they wanted. The bid specs were based on years of running their system. Boeing was able to competently build a proven design. |

I went to Boston College, last stop on the B line and walking distance to the Cleveland Circle and Riverside Lines. It was a really happy four years. Tough school academically but good times, good friends, thousands of trips into town and Harvard Square on the T. Although my dorm room was a good distance from the end of the line loop, late at night you could hear the Boeing trolleys screeching into the curve. ** sniff sniff ** An important chapter comes to an end. Thanks for posting!! |

No!What's your source of information for the TTC CLRV? The CLRVs do not have the same control equipment as the SEPTA Kawasaki cars. The CLRV control equipment was done by Garrett Air Research and the Kawasakis have Westinghouse Electric. The CLRVs have two monomotor trucks. The Kawasakis have four motor trucks that are somewhat similar to the B2/B3 design used on the PCCs. The CLRVs were, until their couplers were removed in the 1980s, capable of operating in trains of up to six cars, but SEPTA's Kawasakis could only run in trains of two cars. When you look at the CLRV and SEPTA Kawasaki's, they're conceptually similar streetcars but when you look at what's under the floor, you see that they are two very distinct animals. The CLRVs are a few years older and represented something of a departure from various aspects of the PCC design to try out new things, such as the monomotor trucks as an example, wheras the Kawasaki design is more directly adapted from the PCC in that regard. I don't know what the MBTA Type 7 cars have for control equipment but it wouldn't be the same as a CLRV either. -Robert King |

Apparently most of the Clevelands and all of Louisvilles ran as single units when the TTC initially put them in service, since the couplers hadn't arrived and the TTC hadn't finished retrofitting them into their final configurations. Here's a link to a picture of a Louisville PCC in Toronto without couplers: 4693 -Robert King |

MBTA's photo permit has been around since the 1960's. They have been making it more onerous since 9/11.The ACLU is opposing it since like all photo bans, it violates the First Amendment. |

I have a similar photo of an yet un-renumbered TCRT car in transition to a Shaker MU car in the TCRT colors with the coupler installed, no MU button boxes yet, new bumper bolts from the structural enhancements, front ad car sign yanked off, big TCRT bronze wheel. Pretty cool shot! The Cleveland Transit PCC's and Shaker Heights PCC's were two separate operations and management. The GE MU equipment that was originally destined for Baltimore's post war order (that got cancelled) ended up on the Shaker ex-TCRT cars. That is the story I have gotten from a couple of sources in MD and MN - all of whom could very well be wrong, as all this happened 55-60 years ago. The Cleveland Transit Pullmans were fitted to be MU, as Cleveland had plans for a streetcar subway downtown, but the couplers and some of the other bits was not installed at delivery. The TTC did retrofit the missing parts. All the ex-CTS cars were Westinghouse, as was the MU parts fitted onto those cars. |

Actually, a consultant for MBTA wrote the spec for the LRV, reviewed by a committee from MBTA, MUNI, and SEPTA. There was some finagling by UMTA, however, after the spec went out to bid. I was on the project staff, but left to go to Commuter Rail in 1974 after the spec was done. 33 years, wow! |

A couple of years ago there were rumblings about using it for a light-rail link between Derby station and the city centre, which as you no doubt know is a bit of an inconvenient trek. What the status on this 'project' is now I don't know. The other one was still in Metrolink's yard last summer. |
