That front sign is an oddball - the letters are squared, like those that the R38s had.I kind of miss the R16s too. I think they have enough to make up a 4-car consist - if they can be made operational. 6387, 6305, 6339 and 6452. I like the colored signs, slanted door-motor pockets and the flaking, peeling ceilings. They worked good as locals. wayne |

You're so right, lol.The NTT seats seem to be fine for many as it's used on the busiest lines in North America. It is a given that if they were actually a problem for many of the riders, the media would've gotten contacted and blown the whole issue up like they did the armrests on the M7s and the ripped pants. |

No.The exterior was completely redesigned with new sides and new ends. The windows became much larger. The sidesign layout was redesigned. The seats were redesigned to be compatible with the new windows (something I don't really agree with...) The small rollsigns on the car ends were replaced with a large, easy-to-read letter. Et cetera, et cetera. They are not R38s at all. They may be operationally similar to them but they're not like them in any other way. |

No..even the TA itself said they were a "advanced design" on the R38 model.Essentially..they ARE the same car..except the 40 has "Better appointments than the previous model of rail car".... What was done to the basic "boxy design" was several things.. Lower profile window/door treatments... Instead of the three curtain roll sign feature like on the older equipment..and NEW design was introduced and placed OVER the window with strip maps included to the interior for passengers. Also..featured with newly redesigned Bulkhead a rather large roll sign for train "signals"[a large E or F]in a color field...along with the retained EXP/LOCAL markers. Originally..this model was suppose to be built as 5 car sets, with only ONE slope mid-train... Loewey's design was "redesigned" by the TA DESIGN TEAM..and they changed MOST of the interior to what resembled an "ordinary" R unit along the lines of the 32/38 model. So,what WAS beautiful piece of equipment,ON PAPER, was reduced to the ODDBALL of the B Division...ALSO..Since they chose to go with the MARRIED PAIR CONCEPT...there were FIVE such gaps mid train[on a ten car train] making it a very dangerous trip for passenger..IN the train and along the platform. |

The exterior signs is not that bad and better for the crew as they don't have to change every sign manually if the train is to be running on another line. No, I think you mean the exterior signs that manage to be harder to read than the rollsigns. What signs are those? The only signs that I know of on the NTTs provide far more information than rollsigns, and do so without the frequent mis-signed car. The only rollsigns that dispense the same amount of useful information as the NTTs side signs are the R32/38 signs, and unfortunatly, they aren't always up to date, or set correctly. Or perhaps the overly bright interiors. I hear this frequently on this board. Nowhere else does anybody complain about something being too bright in a place as dark as the subway. Add to that many upgrades to the technical features of the trains, and I don't see how the NTTs are bad cars. |

You mean the announcements that are ALWAYS clear and understandable?I'd prefer something that sounded less as if the announcer is yelling at me. Of course, this problem is its worst on the Lexington Avenue lines. The signs on the R142s are extremely hard to read because they go blank between readings for no reason. So if you're waiting for a 5 train to Nereid, for example, rather than a 5 to Dyre, you have to wait as the sign changes between all of its readings before you can be sure that it's okay to enter. I hear this frequently on this board. Nowhere else does anybody complain about something being too bright in a place as dark as the subway. The subway isn't that dark. Of course the tunnels are, but many stations are comfortably bright. There's no need to make the interiors of trains look like hospital waiting rooms. |

I'd prefer something that sounded less as if the announcer is yelling at me. Of course, this problem is its worst on the Lexington Avenue lines.Yeah, yeah, I know, I know: Lex is too harsh and Canarsie is too soft. It's all just bias against NTTs. The signs on the R142s are extremely hard to read because they go blank between readings for no reason. So if you're waiting for a 5 train to Nereid, for example, rather than a 5 to Dyre, you have to wait as the sign changes between all of its readings before you can be sure that it's okay to enter. Admittedly, that's a problem. But only at 2 stations in the entire system: Franklin and E 180th. And if you listen for announcements, it's not a problem at all. OTOH, what do you do when a rollsign is set incorrectly? Or worse: A whole train is incorrect! I observed this happen on an A train: It was supposed to drop out at Dyckman, but a dead R44 at 207 forced this train signed as a Lefferts blvd train to go into service to Far Rock. One car even ended up signed as ending at 34/Penn! There's no need to make the interiors of trains look like hospital waiting rooms. I've heard people complain that the interiors of the R62/68 are like cans, the R44/46 are too drab and coffin-like, and that the R38 is too dark. This is a matter of personal preference, and while I admit that the existing NTT color scheme is a bit too sterile for my tastes, this does not dertact from its value as a subway car. |
