YES! "Rebirth'' R110b design in R160ies? |

I've been advocating your subject line ever since I became interested in mass transit. I have no idea why the MTA chose Antenna Design's proposal, nor do I have any idea why they're keeping it. The R160s could easily use R110b-style seats in a non-transverse arrangement. They could also easily use the R110bs' indirect interior illumination, providing for a less hostile interior. The NTTs' first SMS ought to include seat replacement. |

Apparently, you implied it was a major enough problem to halt the replacement of the R32 GEs.From your perspective, it seems that the RFW alone makes the 10 R32 GEs, mechanically among the worst in the system, superior to the R160s. That's like saying the R38s are better than the R32s because their front lights are flush with the surface, providing for a more attractive look. |

I completely agree, but the lack of a railfan window does not invalidate an entire car class. I personally wish that the polarized plastic filter covering the cab door were simply plexiglass. The R62(a) arrangement works well; the small size of the window minimizes glare into the cab, but still allows for a good view of the tracks (and the console, for that matter!) |

I'm not trying to invalidate anything. It's hardly the end of the world, but I think it's a shame, in more ways than one, to be losing access to the window at the very front of the train. The R-62 arrangement is better than on the other cars with transverse cabs, but the window is in an awkward location, and there's a coat hook above it, and the view through a single pane of glass is far superior. If cabs must be transverse, I don't see what's wrong with a full-size transparent window and a sliding curtain (lengthwise with respect to the car) to block glare. Or do it MFL-style, with access to door controls on both sides from a single narrow cab. |

Usually the operator extends the curtain to cover the entire window, though. |

The R62s originally had this, before T/Os and C/Rs complained about glare. It was then covered over with the current metal. You can still see the outline of the old pseudo-RFWSmoked glass would have done the trick. |

Oh, I think I know what you're talking about. It was the cut out for the small window at the end of the side of the car. So if the left side of the cab was folded against the wall, the window would still be visible. It wasn't there as any part of forward view, if I am correct. |
