R211S Order

Posted by GonzoUSN on Wed Nov 27 13:09:46 2024

Good Afternoon:

Have all R211S cars been delivered? I know Wikipedia is NOT the most reliable source for reference. But the number of cars built reportedly is complete.

Bear with me since I'm in Virginia where our rail transit consists of a tiny overpriced light rail system and Amtrak.

Happy Holidays!

About 10 days ago, the 5 car set of R211S was pulled out of service.

All R211S units for Staten have been built, yet most units still await delivery to Staten Island. The first two sets (10 cars #100-109) are on Staten Railway Property, while the remaining cars are all at Yonkers awaiting delivery. They sure have quite a backlog of cars waiting for shipment.

The pilot set, #100-104, must pass its 30-day acceptance test before any other sets go into service. It has re-entered service after working out some computer issues, the primary issue being an Electromagnetic Interference Problem with the cab signaling system.

And to think "Lo-V's" and SMEE's were built and entered service with nary a problem compared with this. The "teething problems" of R-32's when first entering service were minimal in contrast.

To say nothing about the Triplexes and BMT standards.

It is an anomaly how the newer the train, the more computer and technical systems that need to be serviced or ensured are working correctly and the more parts that could go wrong.

From my understanding, when software or computer-related issues need to be corrected on an NTT, an outside vendor (such as Staff directly from Kawasaki) has to come through and correct the issues, compared to an older tech where most issues are mechanical related and are able to be repaired in-house.

Overheard this from museum staff that a trainset of SMEEs is much easier to maintain than a trainset of NTTs.

Yup and Museum staff are the most informed.

And (as I forgot to bring up the first time around) the R-1 to -9 class of cars that inaugurated the IND.

I was on board that second day when we went BIE around Prince's Bay Southbound, slipped on some leaves and from there noticed the flat wheels afterwards. 105-109 ALL have flat spots on their wheel and have not even entered service yet.

There's a number of locations along the railway line where the train suddenly is thrown into BIE; with slippery rails from falling leaves and sudden braking flat wheels are inevitable.

Fortunately it is not the same problem as 4085 from last year with that severe flat spot from a seized-up gearbox (and another 43xx set a few weeks ago).

"105-109 ALL have flat spots on their wheel and have not even entered service yet."

Decades after ABS was perfected for airplanes and then ground-locked vehicles, how is this still a problem for passenger trains?

Well, a group of them, including 381, ran in service on the Sea Beach before the IND opened.

Making it ironic that their last service at the time of retirement was on the BMT's Eastern Division lines (notably the J).

I remember the R32s as a kid on the Sea each rattling up a storm with the flat whels.

So for what exactly do we need this technology again? As far as I can tell, it's for automatic train control and signage.

Not quite true. AC propulsion is less costly to maintain and more reliable. It provides smoother acceleration and a more comfortable ride. Regenerative braking reduces costs by returning 3rd rail voltage during braking.

The latter sounds like a gimmic that could only pay off during the rush hour where multiple trains are simultaneously powering up and braking into stations at the same time in the same power section substation limit. On 20 minute midnight service where you may have 2 trains, timing is everything or with TA luck the first train is clear of Woodlawn going on the post to Mosholu while the train waiting for a pocket jolts up while the substation laughs at regenerating braking off the Con Ed meters. No coasting clocks here :-)

I think the difference in your opinions is that the power electronics and AC motors support TD's points but the computers support 3-9's point.
