The East 177th Street killing spree continues |
|
Posted by G1Ravage on Wed Sep 28 00:33:35 2005 It's gone from the station signs! It's gone from the subway maps! And now, coming to a (6) line strip map near you, it's the black strip of censorship!Gee, you'd think the MTA was trying to HIDE something from us! Yet oddly enough, Jessica Ettinger still thinks East 177th Street exists. On a similar note, the strip maps on the (2)(4)(5) and (6) have now been "covered" by black sticker "replacements" about three or four times now, and it's starting to look rediculous. The black replacements are a good temporary measure, but c'mon! At this point, with the subway system back to "normal" service, and no changes coming for the forseeable future, I'd say it's about time the MTA orders some fresh new strip maps that are up to date. |

Actually, since the black strips do the job, why spend money to replace perfectly good strip maps. You know, in the old days, when the northern destination for the PCCs on the McDonald Avenue Line was changed, they sewed a new reading on top of the older. |

Actually, since the black strips do the job, why spend money to replace perfectly good strip maps.Only because the more "cover panels" you pile on, the more obvious it looks that the original map has been covered up four or five times. And with some of the larger panels, they're sometimes placed off center, and or at an angle, and then things look REALLY weird. |

True, then again eventually the more they do it then they'd have to print new maps. Better to do it when a number of corrections are made rather than to reprint all the maps and paste it on the interiors.Eyesore, yes. Cheaper, of course! |

238th Street killing spree may be halted |

And 238th Street isn't doing much better, although it has a shot at being brought up at the next Parks and Recreation meeting to be officially restored(it passed through CB12 earlier this year). Hopefully MTA will leave the 238 canopies alone for another 6-7 months allowing for 238 to be brought up to the council and be officially restored(whenever it makes it there, co-namings can take forever to get passed). |

MTA however still keeps Parkchester-E 177 St on the 6 train timetable and 177 ST-PARKCHESTER on the token booth.Ordering new strip maps will probably mean a larger fare hike in 2007 ;). Meanwhile there are some more obsolete names(one even much more obsolete than 177) on the 6 strip map that aren't being removed. |

They can censor the 238th Street portion of the 2/5 strip maps and leave it as Nereid Ave.Also on far north end of S/B side, the "other" wooden structure in the entire NYCT system might be gone too. And start saying goodbye to the original mezzanine entrance at Gun Hill/WPR station. A new headhouse entrance now faces the north side of Gun Hill, in front of the current (and soon to be abandoned) 3rd Ave el entrance. |

Doesn't count since Intervale was the original name(163 was added later to the station). 163 St is a block south of Westchester Av where Intervale Av is. Looking at the Jamaica-end of the (JJ)(QJ) and (RJ) lines, it shows these as the last four stops:Queens Boulevard Sutphin Boulevard 160 Street 168 Street Er-wha? Is that the old el? And it used to go that far? I have no idea where the Queens Boulevard station would be...the Sutphin Boulevard station is now Sutphin Boulevard - Archer Avenue, the 160 Street station I guess would be Jamaica Center - Parsons Boulevard, but then it keeps going and going.... |

Especially since Morris(s)on is mis(s)pelled on that map....as is "Kosciuszko" St mispelled too (Kosiciusko). But then again, I believe this is the first time in quite a while that both the map and the station signage actually agree on the spelling of "Kosciuszko St". There are about three or four versions of that spelling, and just about all of them have been alternated on the station signage and the maps, most of the time not at the same time! I remember occasionally the signs within the station itself sometimes had different spellings! (At least it didn't say, "Kosciosko-Brodaway", and it's not in "Williamsburgh" - haha). But anyway, they seem to finally have settled it: |

You forgot the Metropolitan Ave station. That was originally the next stop after 121st St along the Jamaica AVe el. Yeah, when we think of "abandoned els", we all usually only think of the ones with the "old" trains, and old look....Jamaica's El abandonment was a relatively "recent" event in the scheme of things. Jamaica Ave's el was a normal, everyday el, and if you take paint over the grafitti on the stations, and clean the train, this "could" have been almost have been taken "today", in most J stations we are used to: Sutphin Blvd Station: 160th Street Station: The stations even had the signs we are all used to: |

Actually, that type of lighting lasted into the early 90's on the M line el, and into the late 90's on the Broadway El.
