Today's R train.Actually the BMT Standards that ran on the Queens Blvd Subway was the BMT #1 Brighton Local route (Today's Q Line). AFAIK, they were never assigned to any IND runs (I know it was considered in '66- but it wasn't done) Yes, it originally supposed to be the GG line. But that never happened. |

Rode the Standard on the Canarsie line...and of course, the R1/9s on the lines they were on at the time. Yeah...and just about all the post war cars after that. Maybe rode a Hi-V once on the lex, as I've posted before - can only clearly remember that the traction motors' hum was MUCH louder than the R1-9's, and ramped up in pitch almost immediately to it's top note as the train accelerated. when it stopped at stations, the entire train shook, and felt like was going to fall apart. AB's or D-Types out of Queens Plaza during the 50s to 59th St. where we'd switch to the lex. Clearly remember riding D-types later during the 60s just a year or two before they were retired. AB's on the Canarsie line 1966-67; Myrtle-Chambers 1968. Q's on the Myrtle spring and early summer 1968. Steinway World's Fair & Low-V trailers, 3rd ave. el in the Bronx, summer 1969. & Original SIRT cars on Staten Island (yeah, it's not the subway, but these were pre-war rapid transit cars, and they did run on the BMT, though I never rode them there) |

They were REALLY interesting cars. Had some friends down on "Satan Island" in the late 60's that I worked with, so rode the SIRT often. It was laconic like the Myrt, but seemed just so rural. And the conductors were pretty cool too, didn't mind if you flipped the seat as long as you put it back when you were done. :) |

But the Queens Blvd BMT extension service still ran local on Broadway, didn't it? To me that makes it more R-like than Q-like...Maybe, but the #2 4th Avenue local route (RR/R) didn't move to 71st St Continental until January 1961 (and again on 5/24/1987), which is well after the time period Fisk Ave Jim is talking about. Also, by the 1960-11/25/67 period, it was actually the 4th Avenue local that provided this service, wasn't it? And on the R27/30s, it was actually signed as the RR... Yes, I already knew that, but Fisk Ave Jim is talking about boarding a BMT Standard at 65th Street station in the mid-late 50s period (presumably). When the BMT Standards ran on the Queens Blvd Line (to 71st/Continental), it was usually the BMT #1 Brighton Local route, not the #2 4th Avenue local route (Today's R line). In the late 50s, the BMT #1 Brighton Local route (called the "QT" in the 60s) operated to 71st/Continental from Mondays to Fridays, 6 AM - 8 PM only. The #2 4th Avenue local (RR/R) route still operated to Ditmars Boulevard station at that point. When the 11th St Cut opened on 12/1/1955 it was the first time the BMT Standards ran on IND trackage. It probably looked strange seeing the BMT Standards along with IND's R1-9s on the Queens Blvd subway. |

I rode pre-war IRT cars on (what's now) the #4 line. I'm not sure if they were all Lo-Vs, or if there was an occasional Hi-V in there. I know there was some variation in the car configuration. On a few occasions, I stood at the railfan window, but there was one time when the front of the lead car was different, with no real storm door, and the motorman said I couldn't stand there. |

"... boarding a BMT Standard at 65th Street station in the mid-late 50s period (presumably)."That is correct. It was in the late 50s. I was 7 or 8 at the time. We were going to a Lionel Model train display somewhere along B'Way (Memory Fades...) "It probably looked strange seeing the BMT Standards along with IND's R1-9s on the Queens Blvd subway. " Absolutely! Living along the Flushing Line, All I saw & rode there were R-12-14 & 15s. By the late 50s the Lo-Vs were long gone from that line. Occasionally, riding on the IND, I'd ride in an R 1-9 car on the GG local. When the Standard pulled in to 65th St. to an impressionable 7 yr old, it looked absolutely weird. Gothic looking front windows & no front end destination signs, to me, looked alien for lack of better adjective. On the inside, to a young lad, they seemed bigger than the R-1-9s & huge compared to what ran on the Flushing Line |

I remember when admission to the zoo was 25¢. In fact, even that was only charged on Wednesdays; other days it was free. Then they reversed it, and admission was charged every day except Wednesday. Technically, you still don't have to pay to enter the grounds on Wednesday, although you are strongly encouraged to make a "contribution". |
