If you have Cunningham/Dehart's book, RAPID TRANSIT in BROOKLYN, re-read page 42. It deals with the testing of "C" cars 1500 ABC and 1501ABC. These first 2 sets were the prototypes built in the Coney Island shops and tested in January and Febuary of 1923. Some of the testing was done on the B'way-Bklyn el. After that, they were sent back to CI for evaluation. As a result, several changes were made to the rest of the "C" fleet, including wider doors and brakewheel relocation.Now, go to page 53. It describes a crash between a 6 car Canarsie express of steel Standards and a B'way-Brklyn gate train. This happened on Essex St on January 8th, 1926. Note the date, please! on the bottom of page 53, it further describes how the gate cars were removed from service in the summer of 1927. The arrival of the Triplexes freed up more Standards for Eastern Division service. There is a photo of gate cars laid up on the Broadway Ferry spur on page 233 of Brian Merlis's book, BROOKLYN- the Way It Was. I wish someone would re-post the photo of the "C" car pulling into what was a Broadway-Brooklyn elevated station. That had to be the 1923 winter testing of the "C" prototypes. Hope that answers your questions! |

It could be a transfer of Cs from DO Yd to CIY or if its E/Pky it could be a normal weekend train terminating there since some time after the IND opened to Euclid, Rockaway Av station was closed on weekends and the Fulton St el operated into E/Pky. |

Sounds like there's more research needed on what exactly was the wording content of the ban (for all NYC transit, not just the IRT Composites), when was it enacted, and if with the exceptions noted in several posts + yours above, was it ever seriously enforced? It is now packed away in storage, pending moving and a bunch of other stuff going on.,,, when I am settled I will read those sections again, and probably the entire 3 vols.as well (bought the reissue). I really am unsure if there was ever real inclusive ban on wooden cars. The "Q's" ran to Main St, Flushing for the 1939 World's Fair, right? As I wrote before, the BMT gate cars ran under Centre St until August, 1927. Plus, the BMT "C" cars were tested for 2 months, Jan + Feb, 1923, on the Broadway-Brooklyn lines, running to either Chambers or Canal Sts.glad to hear that you have all 3 volumes of Cunningham/Dehart. It took me over 30 years to find Volume 1 (IRT), the scarcest one! |

Everything I have heard about the ban over the years, has all been second hand and verbal - so it almost sounds as though it's anecdotal history. Various people have spoken about the Composites' situation, and say 'from then on...' re: the ban. Others say the same, and then add, 'but it was only after Malbone St. that..." re: the ban. So, y'know, go figure... Again, only verbally, I was told the BU's could operate to Main St. since they had more metal in either/or their trucks or overall design. Most of the people who would know the facts are gone now, with the exception of Bernie Linder, and maybe a few others. I wonder how much Jeff H. might know? On one of the Q fantrips, '69 or '70, we operated as far as Delancy St., but were told we couldn't go any further. But when the BU's rebuilt from Q's were running on fantrips, during the '70s, Roger Arcara told me that a couple of times, when the trip included the Astoria Line, (I think) the Q's/BU's operated through the entire Broadway subway from Delancy St. up to the Queensboro Bridge, with passengers (railfans). And he added, that doing that was kind of cheating and, that it was either kept quiet or was an 'open secret.' When the three volume Cunningham DeHart set was reissued Joe Cunningham came to an NY Div meeting. We spoke for awhile and kept in touch for a bit afterwards. I can probably give him a call sometime. He's a nice guy. I heard about the Cunningham/DeHart history when I was still up in Boston, and was told it was long out of print. So when I got back to NY, and heard about the re-issue I got my hands on it real fast. Thanks again. If I am able to find out anymore information about this I'll let you know. |

Gate cars continued on the Brighton-Franklin line, long after Malbone St. After the Brighton subway was opened in 1920, there just weren't enough steel Standards to spare for that service. Also, bear in mind that there were steel Jamaica, Canarsie, and, beginning in 1918- Myrtle Ave Expresses running under Centre St. Hence the gate car rush hour locals that ran on the Broadway-Brooklyn local until 1927. |

As originally converted 1500 and 1501 had the subway type running lights arranged like the ABs with the reds above the white. After rebuilding the fronts they were arranged with the red next to the white like the remainder of the Cs and the D type subway cars as well. |
