What a lousy spring , the spring of 68 was. MLK and RFK assinated, the war in Vietnam is raging and the worse and ugliest cars ever made for the NYCTA go into service.

Right on! You knew from the far end of the platform whether to stand back or move forward. Aesthecically challenged, awful choice of materials. Makes one think it was a revision from SLC's lost bid for the BART cars.

It took literally 20 years for the bus vendors to get the electronic headsigns legible, but the rail folks seem to have ignored all of the lessons. You would think that having invented color coding fields for the route letters/## that since colored LEDs exist MTA would spec the proper colors on a decent sized screen, but, no. With all the whining about ADA induced features, which are generally useful for everyone, this was missed.

Using colored marker lights worked well for passengers who bothered to learn the system. My late aunt in Chicago taught me the colors on the IC Electric when I was a kid--highly useful when you want to stay under the platform roof heaters until the last minute. CTA used a red field for Express Buses and on the L A and B trains had different color fields.

Believe it or not, I didn't notice that sign the first time I saw them at 34th St. because I was so used to looking above the storm door. My mother had to point it out to me. My sister even liked them and she is definitely not a subway enthusiast.

I was at Nathan's the first time I saw one. The thing I didn't understand even back then were the side signs. They had no flexibility. Not that long later when they started moving cars around there weren't signs for all the routes. The R40/42/44 only had the signs for the route they were assigned to.

What's interesting is that just last Friday, the New York Transit Museum's Facebook page posted this photo of a rollsign and on the comments, it's said that they hope to have the surviving R40 pair, 4280-81 (ex, 4380-81), worked on this summer.

Someone's also willing to donate an original R40 rollsign as well. Would be amazing to see this in person.

The 40's were a replacement order for the early IND R1 cars and the Standards. It was no surprise that they went to Jamaica given the fact that the Prewar cars were falling apart there.

Funny thing about that...when they were sent to the East for JJ,M and LL service,DO got them in shape quick where as there were little problems. They didn't belong there, but they were Eastern Division cars from that moment onward.

the 40s were fast as hell, rough on riders, loud as crap and sweet as a new girlfriend...the SAS,meanwhile,a victim of the times,Should have been built during the 50's but not at the cost of watching the rest of the system fall apart...which it did anyway.

As a c/r from late 1979 thru early 1981, it was not uncommon to have a 4 car train of 60' cars on the F after the PM rush & weekend evenings.

not at all like the cars designed..
they looked like that due to the TA tinkering with the roof line..slanted end AND interior..making the car appear more like a R38 with elongated windows and raked back front end.they turned the car into a "old car with new clothes".

the TRUE R40 DESIGN was more in line with the BART cars..flatter roof line..better interior ascetics made with hard plastics and far better seating in a bench style.

their tinkering made the car a rolling death trap..by sticking with the MARRIED PAIR CONCEPT,instead of the 5 car set like LOEWEY wanted.

I had HEARD something along those lines many years ago. Hate to do this, but is there any proff of that? Be a really neat story since I did hear something like that many years ago.

my pops told me about it..

my dad told me the "car people" didn't like what the 40 represented..they wanted a "functional car for POINT A to B service with NONE of that newfangled stuff with bells and whistles..and if it was up to them, every car would look the same.

He said..they were forced to go along with the new 44 cars design since some guy made a sink about it in the papers[Either that or get the boot]..and ROCKEFELLER made a big deal about bring the "commuter car feel" to the SECOND AVE SUBWAY to match his plans for the LIRR.

Pops was a buff on the down low..and kept up with the scuttlebutt.

Heh. Yeah, back in "our" time, you'd best not LET anybody know you loved trains ... I got into it because I did, told a couple of folks who were obvious that I worked with, and got cautioned out the ass to NEVER let anyone know. "Buffs" were the plague even back then. :)

But yeah, I heard that too back in 1970, along with 76th Street. I'd LOVE to see what they actually had in mind because despite the shovel nose, the 40's were kind cute. DANGEROUS, but cute. I'm sure there was more to what the original design was and sure would love to see it.

Had they made them into five car sets, I'd wager half the fleet would be unavailable for service on any given day in 1980-81.

40 years later, that dream has come true.

Obviously the front of car should have been cleaned up.

As a side, those cars were on the property a very long time before the first day of service, much longer than the 32's and 38's, because during the winter the fiberglass fronts were cracking during testing, thought to be from the winter cold.

I remember those cars on the E and F in the 1970s, when I was a little guy. Somehow, the slant front and large sign made them seem "aggressive" (I didn't know the word then, but still had the impression), and therefore, appropriate for use on the express. Also, once R44s and R46s came on the F first, the E seemed really like the bully on the block, as it was all (or mostly) Slant 40s for a good while longer.

In their last years on the BMT (usually the W, but sometimes the N), I could always tell when one was coming into the station, as they were much louder than R68s. But my fondest memory was sometime in November or December of 1999, on a very gray morning, when I caught one on the J out of Broad Street. I remember the "J" on the roll sign was different from the "J" on the R42s...

That problem could have been prevented (also on the R142/142As) with use of an appropriately colored front route sign. As we all know, the technology to do that exists and is relatively inexpensive.

Fiberglass fronts cracking, maybe from the cold? That's interesting! Thanks!

Was it not frightening for a T/O to work behind fiberglass rather than steel?
