I always thought they screwed up with R160 configs.
The ENY 4 car sets should have been the Kawasaki ones, then possibly easier to make them R143-compatible. Now we will have such a mess of incompatible NTT trains.

Most windows have metal framing around them to prevent theft so that's not an option and the MTA removed the emergency switches due to vandalism. Also a passenger in a state of panic due to being attacked is not going to have the presence of mind to try and find an emergency switch.

Is vandalism less likely on PATH than on the subway? The area around many PATH stations has gentrified but the areas around some PATH stations used to be pretty scruffy.

i know about the ban..makes plenty of sense,too.

but i was speaking of what the MTA proposed..more or less wanting to place the 211 in L service.
that would present a whole bunch of other problems concerning the bench wall along one particular curve...but not unsolvable..
bench walls were shaved back all over the B Division for the 75ft cars back in the ;late 60's..early 70's.

Then perhaps a door or shutter over the control panel. Either way, there's no reason build an entire room.

And if you suspect the door or shutter of being vandalized, I suspect it is easier to get into pretty much any non-NTT cabs with only a screwdriver...

Yes, that is true for most windows. However, the windows for 75' car storm doors are ones that are designed to be pushed out, precisely for the emergency situation you describe.

As for emergency switches due to vandalism: it is not the 1970-80s any more, I don't think people will fuck with them. How often are emergency brake cords pulled now compared to then?

Remember, the Eastern Division platforms used to hand eight 67-foot cars in rush hours as has been well documented here. As it is, most of the Eastern Division platforms if you get the settings just right can actually handle nine cars because of this.

That is WHY I would go for the 67-foot length for ALL new "B Division" car orders from now on. This might also spur lengthening ALL non-eastern division platforms to 670 feet over time to allow for 10 67-foot cars. Although that doesn't seem like much, 70 extra feet per train (essentially just short of one additional 75-foot car) on the Queens Boulevard line would make a big difference in reducing overcrowding on that line that is well documented. That to me is the best compromise.

It would make much more sense to from now on have ALL new cars be 67 feet. That length seems to be a fair compromise and would add flexibility, especially if it's done to where you can somehow have all front and rear cars designed to where they can have all the doors of a 670' train fit a 660' station (or as noted in another post, lengthen all stations outside the Eastern Division to 670' to handle 10 67-footers).

That can work as well, and would be better actually to have some two-car sets for flexibility, since two-car sets also would allow for five cars (335' trains) when needed.

Three and four car sets would be mainly for operational flexibility (even the Franklin shuttle platforms could be extended to 201 feet to accommodate a three-car train that way) and reduce costs without giving up too much flexibility.

However, since PATH is under Federal oversight, the penalties for vandalism are more severe than they would be on NYCTS.

There is wiring on all new and GOH equipment that illuminates a light that indicates which car had the cored pulled making it easier to catch the perps who pulled the cord.
