The latest "final" track plan of the HO layout |
|
Posted by Dave on Thu Sep 13 16:44:00 2012 My friend has a beautiful built-up Sante Fe passenger station by Athearn that's about 6 1/2 inches wide. It turned out the previous "final" iteration of the track plan had the three passenger tracks too close to each other for the station to fit in between two of the tracks. Here's what it looks like:Passenger station I truncated 2 Track to end alongside the east side of the station, where it now will function as a House track. This one little change now allows us to improve and increase operations. The westbound varnish will drops off its diner and a passenger car at the depot, where the yard switcher spots them on the House track followed by the westbound's departure. A little while later the eastbound limited pulls in and the yard switcher adds the diner and passenger car for the trip east. In addition, there's no reason why the switcher can't tie up on the House track when it not in use shuffling cars in the freight yard. I also added some sidings along the east side of the layout. I heavily modified John Allen's Timesaver plan for this section. It now offers six industries to switch, along with the mine and a siding on the mine branch. During operations my friend plans on three crews - one to handle passenger and long distance freights; one to drill the industry trackage; and one to work the freight yard and passenger yard switcher. DCC will be used and engines will be decoder and sound equipped. I should be able to post some pictures of the benchwork before Rosh Hashana. Layout construction is scheduled to start in mid-November although backdrop construction may begin earlier. |

Not really. you've gotta get out in America, A lotta railroading happens in single track territory, you just ramp up the signaling as traffic increases. |

About half the main line is either double tracked or has a very long passing siding. The lower segment (yards) and right-side segment (sidings) will have urban backdrops. Just before the mountain in the upper right and leaving the business district in the lower left, there will be scene dividers with an auto bridge located against the divider, like the one in the background in this picture:The upper half and left-side segments will be mountain/southwest scenery. The left hand segment won't have a backdrop because the drop entry is located here. The upper segments will have a low mountain and/or high plains backdrop. Obviously, there is a mine in the mountain scene. Based on my friend's interests the primary roads run will be Sante Fe and Union Pacific. Since he lived in CT for a number of years while growing up, New Haven "fan trips" using PA's and/or DL-109's will run from time to time. And I won't be surprised to see an I-5 on the point of one of these trips! The time frame modeled will be early 1950's, so late model steam and first generation diesels will be used. Rolling stock will be age-appropriate. |

Improving operations on my friend's layout |

Instead of the mine branch diverging off the main west of the through yard, the gandy dancers have the branch coming off of 3 Track, with a crossover to the main. Now the branch can be worked into and out of the yard without fouling traffic on the main. 3 Track still can be used for through operations when 1 Track is occupied, if the mine job is up working at the mine. |

It you want to run two trains at the same time, you need two main line tracks. No one builds singe track lines in the 21th century! Putting this much effort into a train layout that can't run at least two trains at once (without track switching) would be a shame! |

Actually it can be DAMNED expensive. (Price of a NEW CAR!) however if you are skilled you can build a panel relatively cheaply. |
