I know that this is a few days late but the BMT fans might appreciate it.

Book of Last Runs

August 4, 1969 – This is the last day of operation the BRT 67 foot Standards. The last train ran on the “M” Myrtle Avenue-Nassau St Line (BMT Rt.10) leaving Metropolitan Avenue at 4:49 PM and Broad Street at 5:26 PM. The train consisted of two “B” Type three car units, (S) 2531-2-3, 2466-2649-2467

And on the same day a train of R40M's made an appearance on the "LL". That day was particularly hot - 96°. I know because my Dad, my friend Larry and I were railfanning that day. We spent nearly 15 hours out on the metals. And yes we saw that Standard - it passed us on the express track as our "KK" train traveled along Bway.

Those are 2390-1-2 - and they're still under wraps at CI in one of the huts over by the "N" line (that was the last info I had on them). Not sure what's holding up the works - maybe funds, or else they ran into a part nobody had or could make. They got painted inside and out within the last several years - hunter green inside (?!?) and STD brown without.

The second half of 1969 was a tough one for New York City railfans, both IRT and BMT.

The mighty Standards left us in August followed by the Q-Types in October. The hardest blow for me came in November when the last of the Lo-V's and Steinways headed for that great Coney Island Yard up there in the sky.

Growing up along the Brighton Line in the 1950s, the Standards were like a member of the family. Their sounds and smells defined the subway for me and always will. They, the Low V's and the R1/9s ARE and will always be the NYC subway for me, but the Standards are the BMT, the Brighton Line, and childhood.

I was under the impression that the last run was on the BMT #16 (14th Street-Canarsie LL) or on the BMT #5 (Culver Shuttle).

In early April 1969 Standards were providing half the service on the #16 (LL) and #10 (M) as well as the #5 (SS). By the end of May, 1969 there were 66 cars available for service. They probably came off the Culver Shuttle in early June. In late June there were still three trainsets on the Canarsie and two on the Myrtle. They were all supposed to be out of service by July 25 , 1969 but equipment shortages kept them running until August 4.

This information is courtesy of Mr Berard Linder and Mr Arthur Lonto. I was out of the city at the time helping Uncle Sam guard South Dakota from an attack by those ferocious Canadians.

I believe they were undergoing a shakedown period out there. They were really new. Ultimately they went to Jamaica and were replaced out east by the 4800 and 4900 series R42s. The pair I rode (4300-01) was renumbered (as were all the R40Ms) and involved in an accident the following year at Roosevelt Avenue. 4292-3 were at the other end.

Isn't 1969 the year they swapped out the R16's with the crappy R7/9's on the eastern division, thus confirming the BMT got hosed post-Chrystie St?

Agreed. Aside from the R-7/9's looking just horrible in the MTA colors, it was a monumental waste of $$$ & materials & man hours in geting them dolled up in that Earl Scheib paint job. They knew they were gonna be scrapped soon so why did they bother?? Just keep them close to the wash track & take the saved $$$ & divert it on maintenance. I know, hindsight...
The one smart thing that the LIRR did was not re paint the MP-54's in MTA colors. They knew they were gonna be scrapped soon thus did'nt bother & for once , did the right thing.

The reason the R-40Ms went out there was that the Eastern Division passengers were promised A/C trains by a certain date and since the R-42s weren't ready as soon as expected, 3 6 car trains of R-40Ms were transferred from Jam Yd to ENY Yd and outfitted with Eastern Division signs for service on the 14 St Line. As soon as sufficient numbers of R-42s were available, the R-40Ms were transferred back to the IND.

The R-16s were actually swapped out from the Eastern Div sooner than that. I remember R-16s on the 4 Av lcl in Jan of 1968 running with white paste on signs reading "95 St." The R-9s were on the Eastern Div almost from the start of Chrystie in 1967 running first on the Jamaica to Canal St service and signed up "JJ" also with temporary white stick on route signs. By the time 57/6 opened in 1968, there were sufficient numbers of R-9s to provide all the service on the new KK route and to start replacing the steels on the M and LL although there were some reports of an occasional steel showing up on the KK. By mid 1969, there were significant numbers of R-16s running on the RR this time with proper signs.

I remember the "olive drab" on the 27/30's..I kinda liked it on them too..
I did NOT like it on the 26/28's,though..they seemed out of place.I remember when they painted some r16 tartar red, too! ugly is an understatement.

R16/27/30 were sent to the East..the R7/9 were sent over for the "Broadway Bklyn Local"..which was at that time the JJ in 1967-68.

Remember, there was a so called car shortage back then..the older R units were crappin out like crazy in Queens, the 16's were "underground trains" that didn't like the winter[funny how that worked out, being that they DID operate them in the coldest of weather along the Jamaica/Broadway El]..
The put them on the EE/RR lines..where they couldn't keep time..but nobody cared.

What is the difference between R-26/28s and R-27/30s other than size? AFAIK all the R-16s ended up in the tartar red along with some 27/30s and the IRT R-12s through 17s. Although the TA painted the R-10s in an R-36 paint scheme (later modified) it chose to paint the remainder of the non stainless fleet red until the MTA took over and opted for the silver and blue which unfortunately got graffiti covered rather quickly.

but the Standards are the BMT, the Brighton Line

The Standards were indeed the "standard" car of the BMT. Most commentators always bring up the Triplexes as representative car of the BMT. The Triplexes certainly were unique cars but for most of there operational life they ran on only one line whereas the Standards ran throughout Brooklyn.

The Standards represented a whole "family" of equipment. Their southern cousins were the Broad Street Standards and their country cousins were Staten Island's ME-1's.

It will be nice to see 2390-1-2 back in service some day.

Nice...the Philly cars lasted until the early 80's,right?

I gather they weren't beaten down like the NY version were by years of brutal BMT rails traffic.

Didn't one set pop up occasionally on the "KK"? I remember seeing one n/b at Bway Lafayette - forget which trip it was - may have been 29 November 1968.

Wayne: I won't be surprised if they did. Since they were assigned to the Canarsie Yard they certainly could have been called upon to pinch hit on the #14.

I was out of the city at the time helping Uncle Sam guard the Alamo from an attack by the Mexicans. Viva Max.

The Broad Street Standards suffered mightily in their last days. Toward the end less than half the fleet was available for service. It was a struggle to keep enough of them going to cover the service until the B-IV's arrived. They were good cars but deferred maintenance and age took its toll.
