I was in the city on Friday, November 24, 1967 and experienced the CPW express dash for the first time - on a prewar D. Didn't ride on the BMT at all that day, although in retrospect I wish I had.

I never saw any 9 car R-16s on the Eastern although they would have fit if needed. After the PM rush of the Wednesday before Thanksgiving of 1967, the R-32s from the Brighton Exp that laid up at Brighton Bch were sent to Stillwell to go into Brighton Lcl service and arriving R-27/30 Brighton lcls that were replaced by them were sent to Brighton Bch to lay up and operate in Brighton Exp service. At the end of the PM rush on Friday, the R-27/30s used on the Brighton Exp, laid up at Brighton Bch for Mon morning QJ service since initially, the Ds ran 24/7 to Stl and the QJs terminated at Brighton Bch which unfortunately required a double Xover move between lcls and exps N/O Brighton Bch. That error in planning was corrected on the next pick when the Ds operating a Brighton Exps terminated at Brighton Bch and were extended to Stl only when operating as lcls when the QJ didn't operate. The QJs then became the Stl service from approximately 600 AM to 800PM.

The signs that lacked the "6th Ave" subscript were brand new. The R-9s had "B/6th Ave Exp" signs as originally delivered so they were good to go as soon as Chrystie opened ad was the case with the R-9s on the D. Some R-9s received "B/Via 6th Ave" side signs as did some of the R-32s. Most of the R-32, however had cheesy white on black decals paste over the "BB" readings. That's another example of the incompetent planing in the TA. "C/8 Ave Exp" signs were included on the side signs of the R-27s through 38s, yet the "B/6 Ave Exp" which was intended to be operated, was not included.

the R line completely covers the old EE service, plus extended hours and weekend service since 1987..while the N[the line that replaced the EE] only operated similar service to what the former service provided, with extremely limited service to Whitehall terminal.

I loved the R32s when they were new and even until GOH gave them the cyclops look. They are still gleaming and bright, though, and I like their top-to-bottom ribbing, which seems to enhance the brightness.

I wonder what proportion of their current problems, as you outlined, are due to metal fatigue or body rot or irreplaceable components as compared with components that could be renewed or replaced, if the TA really wanted to make them run more reliably.

Gotta take it in perspective ... they were part of the first redbird order but they came in stainless. Same old shit, got some GOH, but they're that old and busted. I'm sure you were with the railroad to remember when they were peppy and braked nice but they're old and busted just like their cousins. Sorta like the arnines when I came on board.

You KNOW you won't miss them when they're gone, but at least you got to play with them while they were still somewhat in their prime prior to becoming basket cases. You'll always be able to take that with you. :)

That all said, know EXACTLY what you mean though.

The M and RR basically shared all the crap at CI, the slants remained on the A, B and AA-K for the most part well into 1985. I remember slants on the RR (R now) a lot in 1986, but this was at a time when the M was using nothing but crap from ENY, including the R16's.

During rush hours, there was lots of interchanging with the M and R. A Nassau St RR would arrive at 95th St, then turn around and run north as a Broadway RR. Sometimes without enough time to change the signs.

I always hated the R32 because they looked like garden sheds on wheels. And for a stainless steel car, they were probably the ugliest and dirtiest of the bunch in the mid 1980's. Since I loved the R46, and these cars shared Queens Blvd with them, usually I'd see one and be immediately disappointed, particularly if I was waiting for an N or R train and crossing my fingers for an R46.

It always bothered me that these brand new at the time cars didn't have the signs for the routes they would ultimately operate.

Then with the R40 through R46, the cars had the very route specific signs and took away any flexibility to re-assign cars. Of course, it didn't stop them from doing so and running half the trains without proper signs.

The "brown diamond" R signs were never supposed to be used for the Ctl- Whl service but only for the 95 St - Chambers via Nassau service even though R-46s weren't allowed up Nassau. Since the R to either Whl or Canal was not an actual separate route as was the Nassau service, but merely a short turn, there was no diamond sign to be used.

From what I was told, when the R-32s were first delivered, the BMT crews referred to them as "blue doors,"

I wonder if he was referring to the GE ones. When I was a M/M, I noticed that if I wrapped the GE controllers around into multiple, they would jump whereas if I placed it into switching first and then move it to multiple, it would accelerate smoothly. The WH cars didn't seem to have that problem.
