Does anyone have any pictures of pre-GOH R32's with RR displayed in front?

Did the R32's have the RR on the front roll sign? I've found pics with S, QB, D and a few others but not RR.
What would it have said for the southern terminal? RR Bay Ridge?

R32s were rarely, if ever, on the RR in pre-Chrystie days. The R32s were used on express routes (M, N, Q, T), except for the TT and once I saw one on the QT. Given my recollection from R27/30s, I suspect that the original southbound front destination sign would have been:

95th ST
4TH AVE

They had the same readings as the R-27/30s: "95th St 4th Avenue." They also had "RR Broadway" on the original end signs and when the destination signs were replaced by the color coded signs the had a white RR on a green background inside a white circle like the R-42 roll signs did.

R32's were in service on the QB during the weekend of the Christie Street cut (Thanksgiving Weekend 1968). On Sunday Midnight of the cut going into service all R32's running with QB designations were re-flagged at Stillwell terminal to display "D 6th Avenue Express."

The first F headed to Stillwell Coney Island was an R38, as the last F from 34th/6th Avenue was charged up and about to depart for 179th Street Jamaica.

Confusion reigned supreme the night of the 1968 cut over, especially at DeKalb when R1's rolled in with D line designations, and as NYCTA crews were installing new (First time use) overhead platform subway line designation boards.

In pre-Chrystie days, the R27/30/30A covered the QT/RR. Don't know about the QB, a weekend sub for the Q & QT, but do remember them there as well.

They also covered some rush hour Q, N, T, & TT's as there were insufficient R32's. The TT-deadheads being the only way onto the Eastern Division to ENY until Nov, 1967.

Correct. Not only that but the QB did not run that weekend due to the Manny B cutover and Brighton Locals ran as QTs and they like the Sea Beach and Saturday West End expresses ran through the tunnel. I worked Astoria tower that Thursday and Friday and the following Monday, City Hall tower on Saturday and Creek Tower on Sunday helping to drill R-9s arriving off the Culver D, relay into Stillwell Yd and back up the Brighton Line to blend with the R-32s. I'm trying to recall if the cutover did not start actually after the end of the PM rush on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving or not but in either case, the Brighton Lcl's R-27/30s were swapped with the Brighton Exp's R-32s after Wednesday's PM rush so that all Brighton trains arriving Stl that Sunday morning would be R-32s ready for D service. There had been s few R-32s on the Culver D about a week or so prior to Chrystie so that they could be in place in Concourse Yd for the start of the Monday AM rush. Any R=32s that came off the Culver that Sunday morning were also relayed through Stl Yd and back to the Brighton Line. At that time, BMT Southern service was only 8 cars and the weekend D service would also be 8 cars even after Chrystie so by the time I left the Creek that Sunday morning, all the Brighton D service was solid 8 car trains of R-32s. Of course 2 car butts would have to be added to the 8 car trains Monday morning to make up the full 10 car trains required for rush hour D service.

That was quite something.

How did they blend the R27's onto the QJ ? I assume they rolled off QT, and became QJ's Monday morning , and R16's were simply routed to BB ?

I was watching this from my apartment window in Woodhaven. After sundown on Sunday, the in service 15 or JJ (whatever they were signed that day) had become NINE (9) car R16's. Do you have any idea why ?

I think the R32s introduced the simplified "Broadway Local" and "Broadway Express" side scrolls, instead of the more informative "Broadway-4th Av Local" or "Broadway-Sea Beach Express" of the R27/30s.

I recall thinking that visitors would find it confusing that both the #1 and R trains were both just "Broadway Locals".

Of all the new subway routes spawned by the opening of the Chrystie Street Subway in November, 1967 the “EE” didn’t garner much of the media attention that was focused on some of the other new routes but is was a solid and dependable service throughout it’s nine year run. It was not the first subway route to use the letters “EE” and it was not the first to operate through the 11th Street Connection between the BMT and IND in Queens and yet it became so strongly identified with that line that it is still remembered after over thirty years.

History: A roll sign reading for “EE 8th Avenue Local” appeared on the roll-signs of the R-1’s when they were delivered in 1931. It was one of the eight original local routes provided in the initial planning of the IND. It was to be a local service connecting the Queens Boulevard Line in Queens with the 8th Avenue Line in Manhattan via the 53rd Street Tunnel. This first “EE” began operation on April 24, 1937 running between 169 Street, Queens and Church Avenue, Brooklyn via the 53rd Street Tunnel and the Rutgers Street Tunnel during non-rush hours. During the rush hours “E” trains would run between over the same route but would operate express in Queens while “GG” trains provided Queens Boulevard local service. Two months later on July 1, 1937 with the completion of
the Crosstown Line the “E” was made a full time service and the “EE” joined the “AA” in temporary retirement.

The proposed route the new “EE” would not have been possible prior to 1955. On December 1 of that year the 11th Street (Queens) Connection was opened between the local tracks of the IND Queens Boulevard Line just south of Queens Plaza Station and the BMT 60th Street Tunnel. The connection on the BMT end was made just inside the portal on the Queens side of the East River. This two track connection was signaled “GD1” for the Manhattan-bound track and “GD2” for the Queens-bound track. Initially service over this line was provided by the BMT’s Rt. 1 Brighton Line until 1961. On January 1, 1961 BMT Rt. 2 Fourth Avenue Local took over the service. With the delivery of the R-27 cars in 1960 these trains could also be identified as “RR Broadway-4th Avenue Local.” Service over the 11th Street connection was provided weekdays only from about 6 AM to 7 PM.

The opening of the Chrystie Street Line would result in the functional merging of the BMT and IND divisions into a single entity to be known as “Division B.” Virtually every route of the BMT and IND would be changed, discontinued, re-routed or re-designated. There would also be several new routes, including the subject of this chapter, the “EE.” The main Brighton Local service, (QB/QT) which had previously run to Astoria was to be re-routed up the Nassau Street Line and the Williamsburg Bridge to Jamaica. The Fourth Avenue Local which had run to Forest Hills on weekdays from 6AM to 7PM and to 57th Street – 7th Avenue at all other times would now be extended to Astoria. A new service was now needed to run between Forest Hills and Whitehall Street . This new service would be designated “EE” and be called identified as the Broadway Local or Queens-Broadway Local. An early proposal was to call the new service “QM” for “Queens-Manhattan.”

A fleet of 176 R-1/9’s was assigned to the “EE” which needed a maximum of 22 eight cars trains during the rush hours. Most of the R-1/9’s came from the 1100-1399 group and had the proper route signs which would read “EE Via Broadway” others however did not and which decals with black letters reading “VIA BWAY” were pasted over the roll sign readings. The “VIA” and the “BWAY” were printed on top of each other in full size letters so it was impossible to fit the complete reading into the roll sign box. Some R-1/9’s simply carried the original “EE 8th Avenue Local” readings. As time went on other car classes showed up on the “EE” the R-38’s and R-40’s were there used on and off in 1969. The March 1970 car assignment called for 106 R-1/9s and 104 R-16’s though by October 1970 this was pared back to 88 R-1/9’s and 88 R-16’s. The R-1/9s’ were ordered off the “EE” by November 13, 1970 with the R-16’s assuming most of the service supplemented by R-38’s and R-40M’s.

In the middle 1970’s the subway system was in a state of virtual collapse. Derailments and fires occurred on a nearly weekly basis while virtually every surface on the subway system; including tunnels, stations and cars were covered with graffiti. Punks and hoodlums roamed the subway system and made it unsafe to ride outside of the peak hours. Riders deserted the subway in droves for the new express buses or if they did ride they did so only during the rush hours. Money for repairs was in short supply as well so the Transit Authority decided on severe service cutbacks that included the complete elimination of the “EE” and the “KK.”

The last day of operation was set for Friday, August 27,1976. The last northbound train, left from Whitehall Street at the end of the PM rush with the following consist: 6432,6441,6416,6491,6398,6430,6419,6482. The last southbound “EE” arrived at Canal Street at 8:20PM and had R-38’s 4031-0,4087-6,4066-7,4050-1.

The “EE” replacement was a few rush hour only “N” trains running southbound from Forest Hills in the AM and northbound from Whitehall Street in the PM.

Larry, RedbirdR33

The times I rode the QB pre-Chrystie, even on weekends, R-27/30s were used. I'm sure R-32s appeared at times. Post-Chrystie, I rode the QB exactly once, in August 1976, shortly before I moved to L. A., as a kind of goodbye, I did a "ride every line at least once" railfan trip (I didn't do shuttles). It was tricky, because at that time, there were 3 rush-hour only routes: The CC, the soon-to-be-eliminated K and the QB. I started at like 7:30 AM, got the K and the QB out of the way fairly quickly, but it was getting on 9 AM and I hadn't gotten the CC yet, and I knew the rush hour would be ending soon. I was on the CPW dash on either an A or a D, and was relieved to pass a CC at around 116th St. Rather than taking a chance on misconnecting at 125th, I stayed on the express until 145th (since by passing 135th, we would get further ahead) then made the change (as I recall, I had to go downstairs to get the CC, so I guess I was on the A). Rode the CC to Yankee Stadium, then changed to the 4, I remember seeing the Stadium from the 4 platform, believe it or not, that was the closest I've ever been to either Yankee Stadium in my life! (not much of a Yankee fan) :)

When/if I ever get back to NYC, I will do a modern ride 'em all trip. This time I will do the shuttles, don't really have to worry about rush hours only (I consider the Z the same as the J, and I don't count the < 4 >, < 5 >, < 6 > and < 7 > as separate routes. Also, unlike 1976, I will ride each line only once. In 1976, I stayed in the system for the entire ride (found a fairly decent bathroom inside fare control at Herald Square, IIRC, and got something to eat at one of the stations (maybe also Herald Square). For the modern ride, I will leave the system at Coney Island for a lunch break at Nathans :) Upon resuming the ride, I will catch the D to pass by my alma mater, John Dewey HS (I will time it before school gets out lol)

That's why they put up the "Know Trains at a Glance" signs. Nobody knew what the letters meant as the old BMT stock either didn't have numbers or letters, or had the old BMT numbers only.

And these are problems the MTA is STILL playing catchup from some 35+ years later that led to the elimination of the EE (which did later come back as the (W), though going to Astoria since the (R) now runs the old (EE) route).

I don't think he had a shitty attitude.

You asked a question, he provided the answer.

There are lots of questions asked here that can be easily researched/answered on nycsubway.org

I think your attitude is shitty because you failed to thank him for answering your question.

Perhaps my attitude is shitty because I am sticking up for R36?

Barely running with plenty of problems. Very low MDBF and none of them run around the clock like the equipment on other lines.

Last winter, admittedly a harsh one but no excuse because the C is 100% underground and unless a trainset had to go to the yard because of a barn request, overnight lay-ups were underground even in Plan 1.

Plus I was at 168 St. last winter. I haven't experienced so many problems with equipment since before GOH: shop the train upon arrival, stuck brakes on relay, trains won't charge in the station, train won't take power, door problems, smoke coming from under the seat due to defective floor heat.

There are too many folks on this board who are in love with these cars only because they are old and have a RFW. From what I can see, the current SMS is a bare bones renewal of a few components.

Agreed...100%. Once they got the R32s cleaned up before being shipped out for GOH (late 80s), they looked good, though still not as good as they did when they were new.

Agreed. I really liked the blue doors, the front roll signs and the old TA logo too. You can't see the tiny flipdot display until the train gets close up. I guess that's not a huge problem now that the R32s are running only on the C line, but when they ran on the E, F and R, it sure was an issue.

Maybe if the R32's were treated with a bit more respect, instead of a car with one truck in the grave, they wouldn't run like shit. And they can't be any worse than the remaining R42's. One rolled by last night on the Z line and the earshattering din was deafening.

They might be forgotten about if RFWs were included on new trains; who knows. Aside from that, about a third of the R32 fleet almost reaching the age of 50 is a milestone, and of course they're the last NYCTA cars in service from the pre-MTA-merger era.

When I was working as a platform C/R at 34/Bway in 1966, I heard a boo ing voice form down the platform yelling "What the hell train is this." I observed a male passenger running from car to car checking the route signs. I explained to him about the new train designations and he responded that it was the stupidest thing he ever heard of and he was right. The reason that the cesspool of incompetence that has passed for NYCTA planning almost since the inception of the agency gave for eliminating the individual route descriptions was that neither the IND nor IRT had them. It never occurred to the dummies that the BMT was unique in that it was the only division that had trains going to a common destination by different Brooklyn routes. In fact the BMT was unique in that most of its Southern Division services used a single Manhattan route, the Bway subway and only the West end Lcls and some rush hour bankers' specials used Nassau St. The only sensible route sign the TA came up with was "TT/West End Lcl." since that service used Nassau St for most of the time with a shuttle service at nights and Sundays. The miserable excuses for TA planners didn't seem to think of providing a route description for either the 4 Av or Brighton bankers' specials which operated into Nassau St. Even if the TA wanted to use IND style letters for the BMT route, intelligent planners would have used only the individual Bkln route names on the route signs and provided a single letter "R" for the 4 Av bankers' specials. The TA's answer to the bankers' specials was to use the "M/ Nassau St Exp" signs which were actually intended for eventual use on the Myrtle/Chambers service. It would have made more sense, which the TA planners obviously didn't have, to forget about the description "Nassau St" for the Eastern Division services and use the traditional designations of "Myrtle Av" for the M, "Bway Bkln" for the KK and "Jamaica" for the J and JJ.

The current side route signs on the R-32s include Brighton, Sea Beach, West End and Culver designations where appropriate, although IIRC they still have the B associated with the West End and the D with the Brighton.

True. Some of the newer planners obviously showed a bit of intelligence, however, they went a little too far. Routes that were traditionally IND should have reverted to the old designations of the letter combined with the trunk line over which they would operate. BMT lines that received IND style letters should have carried only the letter combined with the Bkln branch line over which they would operate. Having a route sign with a north branch line, trunk line, and south branch line on the same sign severely limits the flexibility of the fleet and in some cases requires the installation of multiple signs for each route for all the possible variations of the route. Certain routes in recent years have been changed away from their traditional letter designations which in my not so humble opinion should be in stone reenforced with concrete and rebar and changeable only upon Divine intervention!!!!

IIRC the front route curtains on the R-1/9s had the 8th Ave. subscript covered over. Didn't they also have the 6th Ave. subscript covered over on the B sign?

I never rode on an EE or, for that matter, a KK. I do remember seeing a KK once along 6th Ave.
