It wasn't any better in the late 1960's with the paper ticket transfers and the R-11's marked up with the "7".

Almost certainly not. During the years that Cs were still around (until 1956) the Franklin still had Sunday through service, even express service. The Shuttles were pretty much 100% B-types, or a bit earlier the Zephyr was still there. By the time they started really scrounging for equipment, in the two years before the R27s began coming in, the Cs were long gone.

It seems pretty strange to me to have spent all that money redoing the line and then intentionally hobbling it. The short platforms aren't much of a problem, but the way they built the single track is.

I first did it the day I took those photos around 1990 or 1991, and while it probably wasn't quite as bad as it was in 1986, it was very rough. I was with a friend, and we moved quite fast down the rickety old stairs down to the IND. The station there was like a time warp. It's too bad it was in such a bad neighborhood at the time, as I would have loved to spend more time outside there exploring the remnants of the old Fulton El. I didn't go back until after it was rebuilt, and by then while the neighborhood was much improved, all the old feel of the old structure was also gone.

The first time I rode the Frankie was in the summer of 1967, aboard the "weird cars" R-11. My mother and I were going out to Rockaway to visit friends. 1967 was a time of strife, in NYC and other places, and there was a rumor afloat that there might be a disturbance in the Fulton/Franklin area that evening. Things were quiet when we transferred to the A outbound during the afternoon, but on the way back my mother told me when the A arrived at Franklin, we would listen for any untoward sounds, and if there were some, we would stay on the train (think the plan was to go to Broadway-Nassau and change for the 3). We got there, didn't hear anything, and went up to the Frankie w/out incident.

As do I. Circa 1969-71. After I returned from 3 years in Illinois in 1974 (during which time I returned to NYC several times in the summer and at Christmas, but didn't ride the Brighton line), I didn't see the R-11s, but 4-car trains of R-32s. By the time I left in 1976, they were using mostly R-27/30s (much to my chagrin, as I hated those cars) :( After that, didn't see the Frankie again until around 1991, by then the Hippos ruled the roost.

I think the part of the station actually open was a bit better than the part shown in your picture, which I believe was fenced off. Condemning half the platform here is what led to only using 2 of the 4 cars on the shuttle train, IIRC. They couldn't platform any more.

If you think the remains of the old Fulton el were something, you should have seen it when I first rode the Fkln in 1959, For some reason, when the Fulton was torn down in 1940, the city failed to remove the rails so in 1959, the running rails and 3rd rail for both tracks were still intact on that short section of el. By 1960 the rusty rails had been removed.

The car in the photo is an R-11 not an R-34. The R-34 contract number was only assigned to the R-11s AFTER the 1960s rebuild.

I don't know but I understand the museum R-9s ran on the Culver Shuttle although unfortunately not the week that I worked it in 1969.
