The first time I rode the Frankie was in the summer of 1967, aboard the "weird cars" R-11. My mother and I were going out to Rockaway to visit friends. 1967 was a time of strife, in NYC and other places, and there was a rumor afloat that there might be a disturbance in the Fulton/Franklin area that evening. Things were quiet when we transferred to the A outbound during the afternoon, but on the way back my mother told me when the A arrived at Franklin, we would listen for any untoward sounds, and if there were some, we would stay on the train (think the plan was to go to Broadway-Nassau and change for the 3). We got there, didn't hear anything, and went up to the Frankie w/out incident. |
