You're forgetting a major thing: LIC is where the diesel locomotives are maintained, and I don't believe there is nearly enough room anywhere else to place another diesel maintenance facility.

BTW, those in the Hamptons tried to fight the LIRR a while back and lost. If they can't win, you know the yuppies cannot win.
