NJT is experimenting with the concept on the PL42's. One concept they should consider is what's done at modern truck stops. Modern 18-wheeler truck cabs have significant power needs, which would require the engine to idle all the time. Overnight stays can be accomodated by providing an adaptor which would bypass the engine and power the electrical equipment via a land-based power system. Since diesel locomotives need to keep powered only to prevent their fuel from freezing and to maintain power to the passanger cars, this seems, at least to me, a viable alternative to constant idling. I'm not geeky enough to know how/why this might not work. |
