The principal reason I can see for favoring the IRT Utica subway over the IND one is that it would connect directly to an already existing IRT mainline that goes into Manhattan whereas the IND version would have required the construction of the entire Utica/Stuyvesant /So 4 St subway with a new East River tunnel to the stub tracks at 2 Ave which would have been much more expensive. |
