Posted by tunnelrat on Fri Jan 6 20:51:29 2012, in response to Re: Abandoned Utica Ave Upper Level (Pix Coming Soon), posted by Edwards! on Fri Jan 6 20:17:20 2012. back in 1964 when I hired on to the t.a.I worked out of 207st yard as a supply truck driver, signal dept.the maintainer who was in charge of me was an old timer,at least 30 years on.I asked him about all the portals I saw around the system&what,if any thing was behind them.he`s the one who told me about 76st.he worked pitkin yard when it first opened& was in 76st when they did long relays from the yard.he described it as the other people who had been in it over the years.anyway,to make a long story longer all of his info was correct.IE there`s tunnel beyound the wall, there`s nothing beyound the wall.he is the main source for much of my tunnel knowledge that has proven to be true.when he worked the road his helper was also a tunnel buff who did his own exploring.he lived in queens village& explored the steam tunnels on the grounds of creedmore.he stated that during one of his jaunts he came across a door in the tunnel wall, upon opening it he claims to be on the track bed of a tiled, island platform station with creedmore on the walls.upon researching old long island press articles about the queens ind.it seems that the people in the vicinity of hillside ave.&237st were pushing real hard to have the ind.extended to at least there.I take this with a grain of salt, having been into the blueprint room at creedmore several years ago I found no evidense of a station.at hillside&winchester blvd on creedmore grounds new condos went up at least 5 years ago.henseforth any access to that section of steam tunnel is forever sealed up.could it be? why not, thats the romantic in me.this same person WAS in the irt ext.at flatbush&nostrand before it was sealed off.the vents in the sidewalk were concreted over &clearly visible to anyone looking down.they were removed at least 5 or more years ago when a store went up next to the irt tunnel.there is no trace of the tunnel ext. |
