I grew up on 187th just south of Hillside. It is a bona fide hoax. (Just as 76th Street?)

But there were empty lots on strategic corners into the 1960's where either speculators or TA kept the property vacant anticipating the extension of the subway: (187 and 188; 197 [just recently built over]; also note the property setbacks in some of those areas on the southside of Hillside, which do not prevail in "non-station" areas.

Somewhere I have a BOT signal instruction manual that uses 179th Street Station to 187th Street Station as their basis for training in a hypothetical way.

I worked with a Bus Operator who was formerly a Trackman. He swore the work train he was on once went out to Springfield Boulevard, because the trip past 179 took so long. Either the T/O was really dogging it, or the Trackman nodded off (too many diesel fumes).
