Galileo was partially responsible for his own fate. The church basically begged him to stop undermining them, that he was right and that they were laying the groundwork for a revision of Biblical dogma relating to Aristotle. If Galileo had been less of a radical, maybe the Church would have not banned Copernicus and Galileo until 1822.

Galileo acted, in many ways, like a modern atheist. At least as arrogant.

Ultimately what the church did was "wrong" in a modern understanding it just wasn't wrong in the way that most people think it was.

What new atheists do now is perfectly good. Christians have for centuries sought to convert the so-called "heathens."

I agree, the Church was wrong. I am talking strictly about the acceptance of the solarcentric universe by the Catholic Church and how Galileo's stubborness delayed them from accepting it as dogma for a far longer time than if he had just shut the hell up, not who is to blame for it.

No scientifically-minded person assumes they know everything about how the world works. What we do know is that if we don't know something, we should try to figure it out, and until we do, shouldn't make things up out of whole cloth and assume things.

I'm not saying he's, infact, there. I'm just saying is that "Facts" don't always play out how you want them to. Another person who doesn't know what a scientific theory is.

It is true that theories are discredited. But when they are, then people realize their mistake and move on from the discredited theory. As science has explained things that contradict religious explanations, religious people have simply strained to fit their view around the new knowledge rather than just admitting they were wrong.

Also, download a spell checker. Seriously. It's really annoying.

Scientist are still unsure as to the causes of natural lightning.

FALSE.

then there are phenomenons such as Ball lighting, Baryon Asymmetry (that there should not be more matter in the universe than antimatter, but there is),

I don't know what those are so I won't comment about them specifically, but what I wrote in the previous post explains about knowledge that we don't have. You have ignored most of that post though.

LOL!!! try and grasp some more straws as you continue to sink. there's nothing wrong with japan flying THEIR flag on THEIR ships that are participating in a multicountry, biannual event.

the ships or flying the flag at Pearl Harbor; the very thing you said was offensive. i'm not offended by either but i'd think having Japanese ships at Pearl Harbor is more offensive than just flying the flag.

so show it to us, all you did was show us flags on Japanese vessels participating in a multi-nation event.

I don't have any definitive proof it's just a hunch. Maybe some who’s more familiar with how these things work can give an answer.

there's no 'religious symbol' going there, a t-frame piece of steel from the wtc is going there.

if the cross weren't a religious symbol it wouldn't have been preserved.

no one is not allowing it. come up with some other debris that may be debris that they saved from the pile, and I am sure they will let you put it in.

So now it has to be from debris? That’s not what you said before.

Technically they are Christians. The difference between Christian Identity and and al-Qaeda is that mainstream Christians condemn their violent extremists vociferously. Most middle eastern Arab Muslims either outright support the extremists in their ranks or they blame others for their actions (i.e. Israel, America, zionists). My OWN attitude is that religion is between the individual and their God, and those that flaunt their religion are hypocrites.

They are, but that is the purpose of religion (at least for the consumers and not the producers); it's to solidify groupness. Just as Northern Irish Catholics could recognize one another by seeing rosary beads (indeed, during the height of the conflict I once heard it said by a Northern Irish child that they ask other children to recite the Hail Mary to see if they were fellow Catholics), so to do other religious believers identify one another by their dress, foods, and practices. Rituals perform the two-fold role of creating a group identity among members AND having them unite against members of OTHER groups, in this case, other religions.

The behavior of Christians in response to Anders Behring Breivik—disowning him and disavowing him of being of the Christian faith (when he clearly is), while at the same time causally labeling Nidal Hassan a Muslim terrorist when both are on equal grounds—exemplify it. What's really going on here is a religious struggle between Christians and Muslims (and between both groups and atheists).

Often religious conflicts have racial bases, even in Northern Ireland. Individual Irish Catholics and Protestants are more closely related to members of their own group than they are to members of the other group. That's no different than what's going on here, and that's why these arguments continue to rage and will continue to do so for a long time.

Similar to mine. I don't have a problem with those that flaunt their religion, I draw the line when they try to impress their beliefs on society at large by force. You can preach on the sidewalk, but don't whine if I stop and point out all the inconsistent BS in the Bible ....

A religon is a system of beliefs.

A religion is a system of beliefs. But that doesn't mean that all systems of beliefs are religion, no more than the fact that a lemon is a fruit means that all fruits are lemons...

Atheisum is as much based in facts as any other system of belief,

Wrong. Atheism is more based on fact than many systems of beliefs, especially religion.

because they all center around an answerless question. I can't prove God exists, just as much as they can't prove He doesn't.

And that's exactly the problem—for religion anyway, and not at all a problem for atheists. The burden of proof rests squarely on your shoulders. It is not up to us to prove that God does not exist, it is up to believers to prove that he does. In the mean time, we will continue to correctly regard your belief as rubbish that's perfectly fine so long as you don't seek to impose it on others nor insert it into public policy.

Or Michele Bachmann's looks like:

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michelle_Bachman:

In 1979, Bachmann was a member of the first class of the O.W. Coburn School of Law, a part of Oral Roberts University (ORU).[10] In 1986 she received a J.D. degree from Oral Roberts University. She was a member of the final graduating class of the law school at ORU, and was part of a group of faculty, staff, and students who moved the ORU law school library to what is now Regent University.[12]
Note the emphasized parts.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oral_Roberts_University:

In 1986 the university "shut down its ailing law school and sent its library to Pat Robertson's Bible-based college in Virginia", which subsequently founded the Regent University School of Law.[20]

The wording in the Bible is vague and open to interpretation. But in the 16th century Catholic church, there was no such thing as interpretation. Only the papacy had that power, and the papacy had been insisting for over a thousand years (since the council of Nicea) that the Aristotle view of the universe was absolute fact. They adopted the Aristotle view because it boosted their legitimacy. Stars and planets were moved by angels. The Aristotle view put the Earth at the center, elevating humanity to the top of the list of God's list of creations.

The world was different in the early 1600's, and so was the Church. It was dealing with over a century of battles with Protestants and was definitely on the defensive. ANY threat to it's divinely ordained power on Earth was reacted to with extreme measures.

Oh yes. Annoyed me to no end. McFarlane is funny, but he's a typical arrogant leftist suffering severely from Dunning-Kruger syndrome. Many of his historically based episodes are full of crap (Road To Germany, The Big Bang Theory, etc).

Back then, if Rome said it, it was irrefutable fact. Aristotle's beliefs were adopted by the Church because at the time, it was becoming apparent that dark times were on the horizon and they wanted to preserve some theologically advantageous science so it would survive the coming Dark Ages. It wasn't until Luthor and the printing of the Bible in vernacular languages (instead of Latin) that the Bible came to be accessible to those outside the elite Church hierarchy. That's when the shit hit the fan.

Atheist groups are pushing too hard. This story is an example. So is the billboard at the Lincoln Tunnel at Christmas. Obviously at some point someone will answer back and the atheists won't like it, because it will most likely be a violent response.

Oh, is that because religious people are too fragile emotionally and so hot headed that you can't take someone expressing opposing points of view (or in this case, the LAW)? So we better watch out because we never know when one of you raving lunatics might lose it and massacre a few people? That's a sad ass place to be in if that's where we're at.

Hey, we atheists have been taking shit from the religious for centuries. It's about time you take some of ours, especially when it isn't shit...

Meh, those Eastern Orthodox types weren't too keen on things undermining their own power. They were just less centrally controlled than the Western Church, so there was less power to undermine. Besides, while the West was dealing with Luthor and the printing press, the East had it's hands full fighting a real battle with the Muslim Ottomans.

Oh, let me engage in my own, for good measure:

Christianity, and Islam (and Judaism, and Hinduism, and Buddhism, and Scientology, and Mormonism, and Shintoism, and Wiccanism, and Paganism just in case any one thinks they're off the hook) are BULLSHIT, ignorant horsecrap passed down from generation to generation that intelligent people have abandoned in favor of reason.

So there.

That's correct, in a way. Not God telling them, but a religious zeal to find out how stuff worked and how it could be used to advance humanity on Earth. Look at all the people who made the major technological inventions/advancements from the 18th and early 19th century that are crucial to producing our modern way of life and you will notice that almost all of them belonged to devout Christian sects (Dissenters, Quakers, Baptists, Presbyterians, Glassites, etc). Just about every single person involved with the invention of the steam engine was a "religious fanatic", from Thomas Newcomen to James Watt.

Like I said elsewhere, you can't remove Christianity from the equation and just assume we'd be far more technologically advanced than we are now. In fact, the opposite would probably be more accurate, and I am only limiting this to technological advancements, not social. The fight against slavery was initially fought entirely by religious fanatics. Our secular, rational Founding Fathers never found a way to end it, did they?
