One's Shi'ite; the other's Sunni. That doesn't stop them being a nasty organization, but they are clearly based in Egypt with tentacles throughout much of the Near East. |

The price of oil is inextricably linked to political stability in the oil-producing regions of the world, and recent developments suggest EVERYTHING will soon cost us all more as a result. It's not just the oil. It's the cost of transporting goods using oil, and everything that we need that is made from oil. $10/gal. gasoline? What about $10/gal milk, or $7 for half a dozen eggs? Something to ponder. |

The only thing that kept our economy from completely collapsing in 2008 is that oil went down for a while. It's already skyrocketed up the last few months, even without this, and I find a lot less money in my wallet to use for OTHER things, as I am putting much more of it in my tank and for heat. That is culminating around the country. And yes, you are also correct, everything we buy or consume is effected by the oil priced, through delivery costs. |

I think the house of Saud is more deeply bunkered tonight than Olog but yes - Jazeera has been extremely active in advocating all this and I see some interesting ramifications ahead for Dubai ... the IMPORTANT thing to take from this story (I'm not bothering to watch any of the domestic spin on this) is that this is NOT an "Islamic revolution" by any means, it's exactly that ... the PEOPLE have had enough.Certainly various factions will try to take advantage of the situation for their own spin, but it won't gain them much traction ... |

One thing I do agree with you on, is that Mubarak seriously underestimated the ability of young Egyptians on Facebook and Twitter, to get the uprising together. It's VERY telling that Mubarak shut off the phones and Internet across Egypt last night. (These have been restored on a "limited basis".)The Muslim Brotherhood aside, this is a street-level revolt. |

I wonder if he can pop up a giant umbrella though to cut the satellite signals ... yes, the mobilization was done through the internet, but the incitement came from the sky. And because Egypt's telecom infrastructure is SUCH a mess, many still use their sat phones and enough of those will be available for people in localities to still get the word out the old-fashioned way.And for our domestic consumption here, we can see also the threats of the "internet kill switch" thingy right here should WE get tired of taking enough shit ... there's some valuable lessons here if we can just get past the yapping common-taters on the talking lamp. |

I wonder if people here realize what the real importance of international events are. You're right, those who are pushing Obama to authorize an "Internet Kill Switch" are worried about exactly the kind of thing we're watching in Egypt.Considering that the main purpose of the Internet is to facilitate the free exchange of ideas, it's not hard to see why governments want to control as much of the Web as possibe--including democracies like our own. |

We may rely on the Level 3s of the country for Technicolor web sites, but I think there’s sufficient distributed bandwidth that will defeat any coordinated attempt at a kill switch. And this doesn’t count any of the 100s of multinational countries with their own intranets and gateways to the world. True but the West has Elbaradei there and he was already Water Cannoned and people were protecting him from the police. So... time will tell, these people are angry and we as the US need to look at ourselves and our willingness to support or turn away from oppressive regimes. If these dominoes continue to fall... but democracy (like in Tunisia) can blossom and we can forge good relations with them then we slowly choke off the reasons that Al Qaeda and Hezbollah exist. Combine that with perhaps a peace treaty with Israel and Syria in the Golan Heights and you might be able to start bringing stability to the Middle East. There's potential here... but Iran is nervous too, if this becomes a wildfire you know that Iran will get swept. Those protestors that were beaten back before won't go down so easily . |
